Advice needed

Hi ,

I'm hoping for a bit of advice. I am in the middle of a renovation and my builder has started to sand/cement the internal party wall. Once this has dried what should be applied next to get the best finish? He mentioned bonding and then skim? Is this correct or is it best to just skim?

Thanks for taking the time to reply but can anybody able to comment on the builders approach of bonding and then skimming? I am on my second builder as the first one took the money and did not complete the job. This has left me in a real financial difficulty I am unable to pay professionals to complete the work now so I have employed a builder who will complete the work but isn't a professional plasterer. So just looking for advice to help complete the work do a decent standard. Thanks

Bonding fills holes and flattens things. Is your wall full of holes and in need of flattening?

Stick a straight edge on it and show us what you see.

Thank you for that. It is a little uneven but there are no holes. The sand cement was applied over bricks which were not straight.

He's decent enough and as he only requires payment after he's completed work I know I won't get robbed again. He's not a professional plasterer but he can do the electrics and plumbing too and with what little I have remaining I wouldn't be able to complete the works if I contracted separate tradesman. Thanks

Altering electrics, legally he shouldn't touch them unless qualified, you can legally do your own as long as it's tested for insurance reasons. But most competent builders do a bit on the quite. If work's got to be signed off by building regs, make sure you get cert, or no sign off.

But you're paying a builder a day rate when you could pay a plasterer to do it properly? Makes no sense. Sounds like you were put in a bad position from the first builder I appreciate but the second one sounds like abit of a bodge to me

He only got to pack it out a inch in places.
Do you renderers do s +c free hand . Other kid who i work with says he doesn't rule it off and his works flat as f**k
 
Ffs you’re paying a bob the builder to f**k everything up when that money could be spent wisely employing the right trade for the right job! God help us!!!

Thankyou. I will ensure that everything is certified property. He has done other properties where building regs signed off his work.

I'm not sure tbh and this is the reason why I came on this site. To get a second opinion from professionals. He said a coat of bonding followed by a skim would create the best finish and it would be less likely to crack?
 
Look if the walls not flat now get him to carry on with other duties, plasterer would of finish by now
Any pictures of the sand and cement walls?
 
Got back from work late so not able to take any decent pics. I've noticed there are a few cracks and the surface is uneven. Obviously an improvement on the bare brick though!

Here's a few more... He's used water and pva before applying the sand and cement.
