Hi all,

Not new members per se, been around awhile and after a lovely long chat with Danny, we're happy to be onboard as sponsors.

We're tax refund specialists for tradesmen, CIS/ SE and PAYE. Bettertax was founded 4 years ago and grown to the team we are now. We'd like to think we're friendly and helpful :). Part of what we do is to offer free tax advice to any tradesmen - so if you've found yourself in hot water with HMRC receiving their somewhat "threatening" letters, got behind with your tax returns, not sure if you are owed any tax back or just need some advice - give us a tagged shout out (Danny explained the tagging system - hope it works! :RpS_biggrin:) and I'll come by and see what's what.

Feel free to give the office a call otherwise and don't forget to mention the forum.

Other than that, I've been around the internet and forums long enough to know the do's and don'ts so, if there's a convo that I can contribute to, I most surely will butt in - otherwise, you're on your own. I don't just talk tax btw :RpS_wink:.

Yes, dead accountants tend not to be too forthcoming with good advice :)... damn! See what you did there? Got me saying bad things so short in my career here!
 
Welcome, I am looking for a new accountant, this year, might give you a call at some stage, a bit useless organising my paperworks though.
 
I wonder if tradepoint is linked to thetaxman ? Ivegot a hunch just like when buying a new tv the other day name and address for tv license ! Im a great fan of tradepoint does anyone else think this?

So Glad for you, I have to pay for them too though, ah well , not the worst thing in the world, its nice to see immigrants doing well and been appreciated by the masses

If we can help we'll be happy to, johnisaif. Don't worry about your paperwork being a mess... as long as you have it, we can help you sort it all out.

A quick tip for you all... make sure you do keep all your receipts for business expenditure and good mileage logs. Takes a couple a minutes a day to note postcode to postcode - google maps will do the sums. Keep 12 monthly envelopes, shove each months worth of stuff in them... or, in fact, a showbox works just as well!

Hi guys,

Sorry for not answering - I was under moderation for some reason - not cos I'd been bad though!

Anyway, yes, quite right - don't earn more than £9440 (this year) and you'll be fine. Cash is OK too, provided you declare it on your taxv retrun and it's not more than said personal allowance.

Of course, you could earn more than the allowance and have sufficient legitimate expenses (evidenced!) that wipe the tax out... :RpS_tongue:
 
welcome along BetterTAX. My question is this; If a tradesman completes their own self assessment, are they likely to pay less tax/ better rebate by using a service like yourselves? For example, I used to work with a spread and in 12 months we earned exactly the same, our rebates were identical apart from the fact he paid £150 to an accountant where I did my own self harassment for free.

One question for thee, if I hire a guy for £750 a week and he works on my clients job , the client gets billed by me for the guy for the week@ £750 ,he deducts tax £150 so he gives me £600. I pay my guy £600 but I have to pay his tax so it costs me £750 so my pocket is £150 light?

It's not always about getting a better rebate, although we do like to think we get good ones :RpS_biggrin:. You just called it self harrassment and that name is self explanatory - what a pain in the ass doing your own SA.

We're experts at what we do, like you are experts at what you do :RpS_wink:. I wouldn't want to do my own plastering when I could be having fun in the sun on my time off - I get someone in to do it - quicker and better! Same with fixing a car or building a wall. Sure, if you have the time and inclination to do your own SA, then good for you. Of course, the other thing to consider is the ongoing customer service should HMRC decide to take a closer look at a tax return - we're the buffer between.

You'd be surprised at how many people come to us because they or someone else has made a right mess of their tax return and HMRC have come knocking.

Johniosaif - let me get back to you on that one. My brain is a bit mushy this afternoon... are you talking subbies? Not sure why your client is deducting the tax (CIS)?

Client is a builder so he pays after deductions,thought that was a legal requirement, if it was a homeowner then no tax is deducted
 
It's quite simple John, you're just over paying, then you claim it back. We do a lot of domestic aswell as for builders and find that the over payments make up the best part of the tax for the domestic work. I find it a lot less painfull than handing over thousands every 6 months.
 
I see it as an over payment but it can be painful financially, one job last week left me 14 x £37.50 short on money in v money out so I am lending hmrc money free of charge for the months to end of tax year. I do get your point on one balancing the other which I had not really considered.
