I've seen lads who were doing great work for years and then started experimenting with different trowels, they work for some but for others they are a disaster.

Marshalltown make some great gear for spreading, I bought a Marshalltown 'Rasp' for boarding a couple of weeks back, £10 and it is a quality bit of kit.

When it comes to trowels I am using a Tyzack 14" I was given 22 years ago. It's so broken in now that the finish it leaves is superb.

It really is down to personal preference, I can't stand rubber handles so always go for wooden handles.

I think the main thing to bear in mind when getting a trowel is the rivets. Cheaper ones tend to pop quicker.

I got trowel that had for years to do my finish a floating trowel and a old w**k*r one I got a s*p*r*lex and I'm 50/50 if I like it can't get on with plazi flex and basically I've gone back to basics cos think I was over complicating it with speed skim as well so now just go with how I was taught and feel a bit relieved if I'm honest

Ive 13 and 14inch mts. A 13 sf and 14 mediflex. 14inch MT is my skimming trowel, sharp as f**k, leaves a lovely finish. 13inch one for floating, and a new one I've broke in floating, I use for coating ceilings now as well, might retire it to skimming now its nicely broken In. But never seen or heard of tyzacks before joining this forum, they good nuff trowels I take it then?what they like to break in or that. Take it build quality n all is good? Just curious for never seen em lol

I love any Marshall Town Extralite trowel spring steel or stainless their dura shape are shite!! but at £72 for one of these new flex trowels!!?? they can f**k off!!! i'l stick with what works for me Stainless MT'S extralite Refina superteds and Eze Spats plus some cheap hand spats I bought off ebay years ago. I am tempted to try these new Speed scums as some lads on here I respect very highly rave about them and I need to see why??

No.....nope.......you can't make me.....I am a free man and I will not succumb...I will....not....buy....another trowel.....even if you tickle me I won't be broken, you cannot make me I tell you, never....

Oooh, tyzack you say........mmmm

You don't get much Tyzack gear anywhere now, 20 years ago you always seen it in the merchants. I haven't a clue why they have faded off, a google question I guess. :-). But Tyzack is absolutely quality when it comes to trowels, you can always tell a Tyzack as it has the "ilse of man" symbol on it.

My local builders yard have them. I got a 14" stainless wooden handle for 20 notes but you can get them cheaper on eBay.

The old boys who trained me had tyzack trowels. They used a double tang for floating and single tang for skimming and after work they were meticulously cleaned and gently wrapped in oil soaked cloths.

b and q have plenty of tyzack trowels in stock. these are made by spear and jackson and they are not the same quality.
