If you put pva on, food colouring or not and it drys, and it has runs that set it does bleed through skim, key is put it on when tacky when using food colouring.
 
I had been watching a program about some doing up a house in San Francisco and they had a guy skimming the old walls who was from UK and he was using a coloured pva

Food colouring is safe to use, but don't pva and let it dry, when painted the emulsion paint was not penetrating because pva had set. Skimming is applied on tacky pva, it says on container, if you do dry then your changing spec.

Tbh my eye sight isn’t as good use to be mate and often work in dark rooms just thought would make my life easier

You’d think they’d color it by now. The reason they don’t is what concerns me.

But surely bit of that there grit would color it enough

Would not matter one bit
 
The emulsion only has to penetrate the skin nothing else the food colouring was grinning through not everywhere just in places and the ceiling would be on the deck by now if skimming on to dry pva didn't work
 
I don’t understand how it would work if it didn’t re-emulsify when skimmed.

Would your skim be resting on a thin layer of dry pva?

I didn't say dry won't work, but spec of pva is apply plaster when tacky not dry. So you ain't following application instructions. So if there is a fail of bond that could be a possible cause. If it works for you that's good. As the food colouring process I do, has never grinned through.

I'm not saying that's what you used, I'm saying to lurpak, you also get pva that's waterproof once dry. They do not all emulsify.
They are many different kinds of pva lurpak, that can be used for different construction, some not to be used for skimming.

@LarryTheLag which one did you use to make a mould of your b*ll***s?

Definitely mate, assumed we were talking about ones that conform to BS 5270/plastering
