Hi guys.
can some one give me a guide on the best way to do mono by hand, I've got a job to price but never done it, ie how stiff the mix should be to build it out in two passes, wet on wet, do I box out a section then go back to start, I've got a Labrador to mix up in front of me so and ideas would be a great help. Cheers boys.
 
The answers to that lie within your own capabilities. How good a spread you are will determine how you want the mix - with mono wetter is better but how thick can u get it?

How fast you can lay on and how big your panel is will determine if you should pass the whole wall or turn back etc etc.

There about 20m each panel with a window in it and working off a scaffold I've also got to work around toothed brick coins and scrape back level to the brick face, going to be a right *******. Thanks for your help.

20m2 is achievable by hand with a mono suitable for hand application.

If you are going the full 15mm finished thickness then 2 passes wet on wet up to 18mm. Not as easy as it sounds. Preferably 1 x 10mm then 1 x 8mm but you will have go like the clappers and have your labrador work like a dog keeping you going. I would have two mixing or at least 2 mixers on the go. If it skins between coats you might be in trouble.

Good luck better still get a man with a machine in and learn off him.
 
Don,t know what you are going over ,but will need mesh around the openings any way , try and jump on with someone before you have a go mate , if you can ,just to get a feel for it ,best of luck

Make sure you tape them bricks up mate!
 
Ive got a machine in a few times . Av prept the job, renaid meshed and beaded and got a local spread with a machine to fire it on and ive serrated and spatted and him and the lab help me rub it up. Then your getting a feel for the gear if your havent used it before and the machine lads will keep your right

if you are going to apply mono by hand you will need a decent paddle, about 1800 w.
there must be chemicals in mono, as it does give some people a headache who use it.
 
Going over block, laying up 5 to 6mm base coat with mesh first then 12mm mono, using sas prorend gear.. Any good?

Sas pro rend hangs around before you can scrape, tricky to time your scrape. @bobby has worked with it as well

I.o.w olican, I move up here from Plymouth about 3 years ago, that's why I use prorend, I do a lot of the thin coat, just never done mono on my travels. Where you based then in Devon then?
 
I'm in Torquay bud, used a lot of pro rend, not that keen though. Mixes and coats lovely but hangs around too long . Are you busy over the water?
 
Yeah, saved up, got a website, van signed, and never been busier, busy on on thin coat been pushing that a lot over here, just like the system and it looks good, yeah the base coats are nice to work with, and the colourtex top coat looks good compared to the krend. So prorends mono hangs about then, I've got this job it starts in two weeks, so I would have to get a lap up early in the morning to scrape later on in the day or can you leave it till the next morning to scrape?

Had many a holiday at Shankilin when i was a nipper. Has black gang chine been washed into the sea yet butler?

Depending on temperature, coat early scrape next afternoon. Did a house last January, scraping two days later
 
Thanks for that mate, no, black gang still there, but the roller coaster got stuck at the top after the start last time I went there. I.o.w technology bud.

Think i will stick with weber ,with a bit of Doctor in it to speed it up in the colder days , bang it on home by 4 pm ,..........

This is what is so good about this forum! Olican being an experienced Prorend user know how to advise Butler on setting times in his neck of the woods.

I have a prorend mono job coming up late November so spray early and scrape sometime next day! Hopefully.

Their Rapid float is great for flat render in the cold months. Set in 3 hrs.

Thanks for that rigsby , I'm laying up by hand, just duck it on 8 ish and rub up next afternoon, how you know when ready to scrape, thumb nail print in mono or trial or error?

Its not just the setting issues, I'd be thinking about,
it's getting the right thickness on to avoid halos, avoiding striping ie where you need a wet edge when applying, spatting and ruling techniques. Like anything else you'll get use to it and get a 'feel'for the wall.
Cant blame you for having a go, but I wouldn't start on a 20 metre panel, otherwise you'll get burnt with it and it will look shite.
