Being a site spread i don’t really get calls for domestics but had someone text me who wants their ceiling skimmed which is artex.

Normally I would say no but it’s for a friend
( ffs)

haven’t skimmed a artex ceiling for years so just wondering what to tell them !!

would you skim over this using zombie mix ?

Normally would suggest over boarding but he wants to keep cove detail.

also looks like a paper under the artex !

I’ve told him to stop scrapping it in case it has asbestos in it.

might just block his number if I’m honest lol

artex question ??

That does look like its on paper...... Over board using board edging beads... keeps the coving but alters the profile slightly...

Wouldn't skim that, that's for sure. If they really really must keep the coving I would run a Stanley knife round the edge of the whole lot (can do it an inch in so you can scrim), take it down and reboard. It's a little fiddily but I've done it a couple of times and works a treat

Unless it's lath and plaster... Can still be done mind, did one last week. Day to rip down and board up to coving, back next day to skim

Pussy! Lol

Give him the choice . Pva and scim . If it comes away he still pays you . Or he's got take it all down. Looks like it's coming off easy. Let him strip it. Face mask ect. Pva and scim £240.cash as he's a mate . He'll probably just pain't it

It's a HOUSE! :frenetico:

Let me say that again for emphasis: it's a HOUSE!! A large building that keeps you and your family warm and dry , in all likelihood worth over £150,000 and increasing in value :frenetico:

If it was a car,. That has much lower price tag, is depreciating in value and you needed a repair to one of it's sections it would cost hundreds and no-one would quibble.

Coving down overboard and skim inmho :coffe:

Yeah I went over an artex ceiling before that had been put on top of lining paper I didnt scrape back as used a zombie mix so wouldn't of known the f**k*r came down as I was cleaning up

With all due respect,
Stick to site mate and let us all do the real work

its done with a sponge inside a plastic bag but doubt u would ever match it

Just tell him to keep scraping, get it all of, sand it, fill it, (one time devil filler my favourite) paint it - done
You don’t have to get involved and tell him you’re saving him money

Looks like a lath and plaster ceiling

Check it's not lime wash under that paper...
(Chalky to touch)
weight of plaster and water in skim will bring it away if so..

Most celings I do are over artex . Now and again you might get a small area come away. Tell him to give it 2coats of waterproof pva . And get on with it. And go to the pub.

Seems a bit like overkill to save some gyproc cove, if it was run in situ cornice that would be different that could cost a bit. New coving and an overboard and skim would have cleaner and neater job.

Did one earlier in the year in a renter.Just boarded up to coving though :numberone:
