PB will breakdown if it gets wet, simple as whether standard or M.R. If hardie backer gets wet, it’s still like a sponge (till it dries out), but won’t fall apart.
If you want to waterproof the walls, then brush on a tanking solution, or use modern tiling boards like Wedi or Jakko which are waterproof.
Most problems are down to the silicon breaking down or not being renewed when it gets shitty, or being done wrong in the first place. Bad tiling and grouting is another problem.

I’m with @djfleming22 and @ChrispyUK use some kind of cement board over bath/shower area and if you want to go belt and braces a tanking solution taped over the edge of the shower tray.
Don’t skim tile directly onto the board.
It won’t be a disaster on standard PB but it’s a better job done properly onto cement board

Moisture board is pointless in my opinion, if water reaches any of its edges it'll destroy it, best bet is Hardiebacker on stud work.. although nothing wrong with standard plasterboard providing the shower area is tanked using a tanking kit (Ardex, Bal etc/ do them), chances of water getting through the tiling is remote, it's the silicone joins along corners that it'll get through, if it does it'll destroy the boards behind the tiles.
