I was taught and use a completely different method.

I got a 100 mm straight edge , place up to cieling , pencil line and stick coving with 15mm gap

Nothing a big glob of filler can't fix Norm.
I used to love coving, it almost felt like a day off after plastering a house out. I haven't been asked for it in about eight years now. Pity.
