I’ve been doing this for 25 years now and In the last 12 months I’ve heard of 2 suicides of spreads I worked with. Has anyone else experienced the same. I worked with a bloke and he used to say that the colour of skim makes you depressed.

Makes me happy when it starts to dry so I can trowel up and go home but I’ve never come across any spreads that have ended it

We had 2 years ago.
We were on O,Connells a huge plastering firm. He was a young chap in his 20s always a misery guts. This day he was ever so cheerful , could not do enough to help. The following day the contracts manager asked us "what happened yesterday?" We answered that he was OK and on top form yesterday. The contracts manager said when Allen got home yesterday he hung himself in the wardrobe. His poor father who also was a plasterer on the firm was totally devastated.
The coroner said that he had killed himself and the reason that he was so happy that day was because he had made a decision.
The second one was also a young lad ,a plasterer who worked with his father on the firm. He was an odd lad who would sleep in a tent in the garden for weeks on end ,instead of his bed in the house. He shot himself. His father and his brother kept asking why would anyone do that to themselves? That devastated his family.

at college lad topped himself
we was aving lunch together me, him and other lad. He said about some kid jumped out of 4th floor window and died that way, I thought was just a conversation at the time about stuff that happened locally. This was a Tuesday we went every tue.
next week teacher asked at beginning of day for us all to gather around and informed us the lad topped himself last Wednesday. later that day I recalled the conversation we had in canteen day before he hung himself and had no idea he was thinking about such for himself. After that if anyone ever says anything like it I grill them a bit trying to both reach out and undo the lack of understanding I had back then or lack of sensitivity.
anyway, he had a father who had a firm and three older brothers who were all in the family business and I wonder if the pressure to perform something you don't want to do gets on top of you?

knew a joiner who was being harrassed by inland revenue over dispute over money,
over a period of a few weeks he made sure that his wife and family were okay financially, mortgage paid off/isa accounts etc etc all in wifes name,
paid his 3 employees off, redundencies money all paid/sold the vans/tools/macinery in joiners shop for cash, gave that away to charity,

and then one day he went for a drive and shot himself,

inland revenue never got any money,

Where do you live. Very sad
I live in north Essex on the Suffolk border. O'Connell the plastering firm were Ipswich based about 10 miles from my home. O'C Connell was a very large plastering firm employing 200 people. They carried out huge works like the Hilton hotel in Egypt.

The country is nasty now, just like America . All the bad things from America end up here.
Years ago if I had a problem with income tax I would go to my local tax office, have a discussion about the situation with 1 of the women who worked there and it would be sorted out. Now it is all online and sod you.
Now all you get is penalty notice for this, penalty notice for that. If you got on a bus and had forgotten to bring your money with, the conductor would say don't worry pay tomorrow. Now it would be a fine.
At our local railway station you are allowed 10 mins to drop off a passenger. I saw a friend who I had not seen for a while went over to say hello. A few days later got a letter through the post £50 fine. I was not trying to rob them by leaving my car there all day without paying the parking charge. I was a few minutes over.

But surely if you're up too date with everything there shouldn't be a problem

The tax for any vehicle used to be so easy, you had a paper disc that you could see on your windscreen. You knew when it was due ! Now its online, in the cloud, its not where you can see it. Is that progress ?

As a business man you have to look after yourself. You could get a better deal at the tax office without paying an accountant ,who is frightened to attempt a deal as he has to try to get his clients accounts passed there every day.
But that is what an accountant is for to help you with your books

The tax office can call an investigating any time . Hold on to your repayment which could take 5 years.
I know mate, had one ten years back, an arsehole all trades South African w**k*r stuck me in, total lies in all honesty ! Cost me 16k. My accountant s**t it and it would have cost me that much to get one of the big wigs in to fight it. Cut my losses. s**t happens !
