no im not winding anyone up how thick does a finish coat of plaster go on the wall i'd say between 3-5mm

i put 3-5mm on the answer and was told by the nvq chap to cross it out and put 8mm in ;D....apparently its the right answer

all depends on the background but usually 3mm per coat...... but if im skimming on board 2mm then 1mm i read that on the bag.

bg says 3mm

It used to be 3mm but it's now 2mm but I think thats splitting hairs. There have been doors cut into walls I've plastered on site and the skim where cut through has measured 2mm, more luck than judgement I guess.

Any clown can get an NVQ level2, (not that you're a clown if you have one) but from my experience a lot more questions and evidence was required to get the level3. I was asked to prove that I could do the following

VR01- Conform to General Workplace Safety
VR209- Confirm Work Activities and Resources for the Work
VR210- Develop and Maintain Good Working Relationships
VR211- Confirm the Occupational Method of Work
VR71- Install Mechanically Fixed Plasterboard
VR76- Produce Complex Internal Solid Plastering Finishes
VR77- Produce Complex External Rendering Finishes

I had to show the assessors work I had completed and a site agent had to sign a form saying that the work was mine and confirm a good working relationship over a prolonged period of time. I think the NVQ3 and CSCS Gold Card is the way to go if you wish to stand out from the masses, one thing is for sure it can't hurt.

spot on andy and i think they have got onto it, it was the case a few years back when they were givin them away and if its most peoples opinion its not worth the paper its written on, the general public will know this and will look out for the gold card. wether you like it or not its comin in i was told by my lecturer 20 years ago he was sayin it was a european thing. Whats wrong with quals? like i said i was arguing 6 years ago on ebuild and the same plasterers argued back............usually the ones without quals. I hope it does come into domestics coz a lot of yous slag these small courses producing your competition why not clean it up a bit?

Can't see you needing one with Domestic work, i've been in the game 25 years and learnt of the old man who's still working with me, 90% our work come from recommendations, i very much doubt even in 2020 my customers are going to ask me if i've got an NVQ, i stilll advertise in the local rag and no one has asked if i've a NVQ yet and when someone does i'll laugh and tell them that we've known(wont call them spreads) people who have been on a course, got one of these NVQ's and can't even get the plaster off their hawk without getting all down them.

I can see you'll need them for site work but never for domestic.

is he from round my way spunky? theres a rambo up here, never met him but hes a bit of a legend

Update: My dad phoned an accessor today to find out the crack with the NVQ's. Basically we can't get funding because we both have qualifications in other things. But they have pretty much stopped the funding now any ways. The course cost £1500. He knows my dad and basically said he would probably only come round once and check out some floating and setting and that would be it. He has also admitted that the system is completely wrong and flawed. So we are just going to see how this pans out before making our wallets £1500 lighter. Fckn Joke!!! >:(

If that's all he's going to check it sounds like an NVQ level2 and if your going to have to pay £1500 :o then you might as well go for the level3 surely it can't cost any more.
I was talking to a sparks the other day and christ you should hear how often they have to pay out just to be allowed to keep working.

I shall wait and see what happens. It will only be a matter of time before firms and domestics get pissed off with all the so called qualified numties f**k**g all there walls up.

Probably would be beneficial to go for the gold card straight off when the s**t hits the fan..
