Bonding is interior backing plaster. It will suck up water, no good for exterior at all.Why is it wrong? (so I can understand)

Tbf boards were dabbed with (pink ) or skim plaster before dri wall adhesive came out , before my time but if I’m correct up until somewhere in 1990sahhh ok! I thought that looked like bonding (also didn't know what bonding was - thankyou for the definition!)

How do you know it was skim and not bonding compound .? just because it was pink ? AL the gypsum mined in the south is pink but any from the north is grey. Many years ago (1990's) i did some work in Liverpool and the finish was grey .
