First time screeder - Advice needed

Hi All,

I am about to take on the screeding of my downsatirs floor and I need some advice on tools, the area to be screeded is 6.5m x 5m

I want to buy a decent straight edge, am i best getting the longest stratight edge I can buy/afford?

I was thinking of getting the 3 meter version of this https://www.speedcrete.co.uk/aussie-combo-hand-screed.html

Anyone got any alternatives? I assume the longer the better right?

Any advice on other tools i will need for the job would be appreciated.

Is this a one off DIY job?

Knee pads and a crate of beer will help!

I really don't mind screeding.
Once you're up and running there's so little to think about.
No dodgy materials that you can't control or other trades messing things up for you (generally).
I always charge enough that we earn decent money laying 50sqm. a day.
If the OP is doing this as a one off then a straight length of 3×2 will be spot on and definitely no longer than 8ft. long.

to be fair its one of those jobs I hate the thought of but find quite satisfying when doing it :D
 
I am on my own with no access for readymix :( So i have to mix and screed as I go, what kind of working time will i get do you think? If i have to mix 1.5m2 should i mix half then screed half the room, then mix the other half and screed the remainder? Or split into quarters as far as mixing goes not sure of how long i have before it becomes unworkable.

That's not a alot make your bays then keep mixing, filling in and pulling your screed till your out the room

I'll be very surprised if you don't struggle with a 3m rule, I've done hundreds of screeds and I don't bother with one.
I'm guessing that you realise you'll need more than one length rule?
In these cooler temperatures you'll get a good couple of hours working time with correctly mixed gear. Only you can know how quickly or slowly you'll be able to lay the floor.
Screeding definitely isn't the easiest thing to do well.

if you want to get extra working time flood the oversite before you start.
you will need knee protection as you don't want cement burn on your knees.

A good screeding job should leave a surface uniformly flat between two guides without any low spots or holes. Time is of the essence. A good screeding job should also leave plenty of time to float the surface and complete the finishing process before bleed water reaches the top of the pour.

A screed can be as simple as a wooden two by four or as intense as a motorized, vibrating and oscillating machine. Your screed will depend on the size and complexity of your project.
