Greetings,from an old git.

Just starting 50th year in the trade, only a year left until i get regular wages off HM govt. Anyway joined forum as your never to old to learn something new, and something to read next year with feet up!
welcome aboard pal hope you can stick the s**t u might get on here its all good fun I have 53 years below the belt and still at it where u based

Brilliant 50 years, man that is just what we need on here , I think @malc is the oldest members on here , so welcome

i started as a probationary apprentice plasterer in april 1963. as a 15 year old. it was april that year that the building trade returned to work after being laid off because of the freezing conditions in the long winter.

i completed the 6 months probation period successfully, being in the yard at 6 30 am every morning without being late. i then signed my indentures for a 5 year apprenticeship, i was very lucky as that was the year that the apprenticeship had been cut from 7 years to 5. therefore upsetting the lads who had served the extra time.
i have now completed 55 years and will return to work on tuesday after our holiday, swimming ceilings in Regency lime finish. lovely material to use but must be applied in 2 coats with a total no more then 1 mm.

It's saddening that the trade has fell so far. Times change but it's not always for the better. Skills like you older guys have should be taught, it should be part of a proper government program to have apprenticeships that are meaningful.

I'd of loved to of learnt of an old school spread.. As the world moves forward its skill that's lost as time is of the essence for faster production.

My tradesman was 63. But even then he told me(early1980's) the building trade was f**k*d. I thought in my ignorance he ment money, when what he ment was that a skilled trade qualification was being devalued.
