Awryt guys. Skimmed a living room last week, was old lime plaster walls, knocked off all the loose (was quite bad in some areas) did the usual taped up any cracks, pvad the walls, levelled them out with bonding, gave the bonding 2 hours drying time then on with my 2 coats if multi. Was in tonight havin a look to see how they were drying out and there is 3 quite long hairline cracks above the radiator wall. The customer painted these walls 3 days after i skimmed them and told me they took 8 coats to cover the plaster... (although i told them to let it dry out completely first) does anybody know why these cracks have appeared? I know it could be the usual movement's, house setting, weather change etc... This is first its ever happend to me and im wondering if its the customer whos caused this?? Im thinkin of just scrimin them up and fillin them in with joint cement and sandin them down as the plasters not blown.

movement, suction.. sometimes you cant stop a crack appearing mate.. it happens to us all.... if you have taped the cracks and sealed the wall correctly, thats all you can do really... unless you want to go and strip back to brick and do remedial repairs, but thats a bit much..

i would guess that the radiator has been on full bore! if he gave it 8 coats of emulsion then he did not give it a colour wash and leave it for 24 hours to seal the plaster before he decorated.
if the walls had cracked quite bad with other areas loose i would have taken the complete wall off.
when we reskim on lime we give the walls a couple of coats of pva to ease the suction.

I explained to them to let it dry out completely and then do the first coat a watered down 1. I did there bedroom for them last month and its spot on. He did say his mrs left the heatin on and he got up early hours to switch it off. Might be the heat thats caused it. Goin to scrim them and fill them tomorrow. See how it goes. Cheers

Aye m8 i gave it 2 coats of pva also. I always 2 coat pva, let the first 1 dry in then hit it when 2nd is tacky. Made sure any loose stuff was knocked off and the rest imo was solid and gd enough to take a skim. I think the customers rushed it to get it decorated for xmas.

Seems a lot of weight on the wall with just the pva holding it all on.a bond it type of material would be better suited although the best way would be to take the lime off and start again.

I did their bedroom for them last month, the walls were probs just as bad and they skimmed up spot on. No cracks at all painted and finished. Dnt fancy scrimmin and fillin cracks in for the rest of my life as they live a few doors down lol! Hopefully they fill out and disappear

At least you pva the jobs yourself, a so called plasterer i know gets the customers to pva any walls or ceilings before he gets there on most jobs!

Any jobs i do round peoples houses over existing plaster i tv10 mesh the whole thing never had any callbacks.hello all by the way lerker speaking out for first time

Am the same only ever ask the customer to clear the room out for me and make sure paper is off although i usually spend my first hour scrapin off paper that they have missed for some reason .

It's obvious what you should have done. You should have given it a coat of wba, a coat of thistle bond it, a coat of blue grit and a coat of any other bonding agent you've got in the van. Wouldn't have cracked then lol

Been waitn on that comment m8 haha!

Having a tub of fibre lime sorts cracks out a bit of a piss about cutting the cracks out and filling but sorts the problem.
Artex sealer kills the suction on old painted lime walls , have you not tried paper tape.

Care to explain ?

I dont think it needs much of an explanation. Youre a penis. You give out **** information like use a bonding agent (designed for low suction) on a high suction background and then pva it to deal with the suction. Youre fuking clueless

crown decorating centres sell it

f**k**s told me they dnt stock it when i phoned them up... This was a few months back when i was lookin for it. Phoned up the local merchants etc crown centres and couldnt get it anywhere. Even online
