How much work is this?

I don't see the problem with leaving the cornice? it's usually a specialist job to replace and costs a fortune... I had a similar job where customers wanted to keep original skirting, had to cut render off at skirt level and re render out to it, no reason why he couldn't have done the same though.. it's not difficult building up in a few layers.
 
That's the measurements at the sill, you can easily see the difference there but it's much further out above the window.

Why have you had the room replastered and left that minging old sill in?

Makes it start to look like you might have leaned on him for a cheap job and now you're upset because you got one.

How much did you agree the job at before you started and did he say that he was going to follow the wall?
 
The sills aren't staying. I didn't realise he was going to leave them in. It's my first house and I know nothing about the process of renovating it. I certainly didn't ask for a cheap job, I said I wanted it done properly. He advised me to leave the ceiling and cornice after I said I wanted it down and boarded over. I even offered to take the ceiling down myself as I know it's a crap job to do.

He should have asked about the sill. That will be a right ballache to replace now.

What did he actually do and how much did you pay him?

Not hard is it? Sill being replaced boss? £50 for a quick drive to the yard and five minutes sawing. Tin of foam/tube of sticks like s**t and Bob's your uncle, you're £35 up for ten minutes work and the job's brand new. Up here for thinking, down there for dancing.

Our new pal doesn't seem to want to spill the beans on the price of the job?

I’ve worked for myself since I was 15 you baked bean. I’ve had blokes your age working for me when I was 20. I don’t need to work for anyone.

You’ll learn that no good deed goes unpunished.

If you ask about the sill 1 of 2 things happens.

1) they think you’re pushing work

2) they say yes and you lose half a day f**k**g about with something other than what you’re there for (Plastering)

If you’re a busy body then ask these f**k**g questions during the quote.
 
I'm with lurpy, it'll take a lot more than 10 mins to actually replace a sill.. especially if it's a bay window.. £35.. maybe £135, things never work out as planned either, a quick 10 minute job almost certainly never is.

That's when I do ask, you ignoramus.

If it takes you half a day to put a sill on, then of course you should not do it. But if you can actually use a tape measure, then it takes five minutes and the customer won't curse you when he's digging the old one out of his lovely new wall.

As you're repeatedly told but never listen, there's more to the job than skimming.

I learned long ago, you raving madman. Whatever you're paid to do, plastering a sill in when it's plain as the nose on your face that it's coming out is just plain wrong. You know better and the customer will only find that out later.

Not only is it wrong but it's silly because it's an extra few bob for you.

It's very often a lack of communication.
Frequently started by the customer saying they're on a budget. When the customer says they're on a budget or they don't want a rolls Royce job, they fcuking well DO want a Rolls Royce job.

What they mean is that they don't want to PAY FOR a Rolls Royce job.

If they had a conversation like that and he then priced to follow the wall and backfill the cornice then you get situations like this.

Agree mate, going round with a ruler measuring things then folk on here telling him £300 to repair. This place has gone mad. From the pics that looks a decent plastering job. The op’s want to browse some of the pics on this forum to see what a cowboy would leave. On the basis of them pics you wouldn’t know if he’s plumped the wall true and flat and the cornice is out or he has a little dip in his wall. Either way it’s hardly the end of the world.

Removing and replacing a sill isn't a plasterers job and not what he was hired to do. Having said that if he's skimmed the whole house he's been there a couple of weeks at least, so I would of said to the customer you want to get a new one sorted before I get to that room. Or is every sill in that state?!

I wonder if this is the only problem in the whole freshly skimmed house though?

If the customer said shall I remove the ceiling and cornice though then I can't understand why any plasterer would say no. Extra half days work added ok the price to board the ceiling and a better easier job.

Well, I'd have brought it up on my pricing visit and priced it in if asked. An ordinary sill is fekkin nothing to put in.

End of the day, it's my job to earn money, not be pissy about what plasterers should and shouldn't be doing. Same I'll put the skirting on, paint it... whatever it is that the customer needs doing. Don't want no other f**k*r doing the work.

Slurpak be very well advised to keep other trades away from his skimming the way it's going for him. They might point out state of it.
