How to prevent soot staining ?

I’ve been asked to plaster the inside of an old coal fire place and have heard soot can bleed through skim, How do I prevent this ?

I normally get as much off then seal it with sbr 2 coats

Bitumen, throw some sand at it when its still wet to provide a key
Or If its not too bad just PVA it then spray it with stain block next day.

I think if you need to prevent soot from bleeding through, seal the surface with a stain blocker or use a PVA solution before plastering. This will help stop the soot from affecting the skim.

I would cover the area that has soot contamination with building felt. fit EML this may have to have plug and screw fixings. Then float and set the area.

The OP said that the soot was on the inside of the fire place.

Dry line it with plasterboard if no working fire or cement boards if you have a burner.
