the two jewsons merchants in Carlisle have now closed, as well as workington branch, cost of living/ fall in enquiries, buisness/ nat ins, ,, and so on and so on,

Travis, jewsons and the like business model does not work these days, Selco and the like will win out. Our local EH Smith Birmingham is in between, not like Selco made up mostly of shelf stacking till operating staff but neither is it nationwide conglomerate with fat cat at the top…..

Jewsons had a buy out from a Danish firm a couple years ago. My local Jewsons is on prime building land. Right on the edge of the river Stour in the centre of town.

Word of the week conglomerate . I had to Google what that meant . Ha ha

malc, could be wrong, but seemingly if jewsons do not own the land where there branches are, they are closing those branches down, so says the rumours up here,

I think the key is knowing prices as you go. (Selco and the like)

Not to get to the till with people waiting behind you, fully loaded motor with plaster or cement and board and s**t, ready to get dry rammed with a joke of a price. And then to argue like a p**i on crack to get something justifiable. And they look at you like they've done you a favour.

Jewsons = Sons of Jews.

Thieving bastards and always have been!
I’ll personally be glad if all branches shut overnight.

Few years ago I had to argue like a c**t to get a few sheets of board for around £8 each. Standard 8x4 sq edge 12.5mm.

Got back to the job, unloaded them. Builder/owner comes in, his own gaff, massive plot, I told him the cost....

He says no way you paid that, and gave him the receipt.

He says, he's had 2 pallets so far, paying £2 a sheet. I said f**k off £2?

He shows me proof - I said wtf?

He says, he just said to them, his work will probably be on t.v, do us a good price!

He reckons they said they still made a profit at that price.

With Jewsons you need to open a cash account. Then all of regular purchases will be placed on their computer so that you get the same price at any Jewsons. I have received some bargains from Jewsons clearing their old St G stock ready for the new company stock.

Builder I work for gets everything from Jewsons. I once spotted nice ox hawk whilst picking up materials and was just gonna pay for it when mate at checkout said he'll give me my Builders discount... I had that hawk for £10, I was a bit shocked , but he is highest spending builder in my city. I now try to buy all my tools there with discount lol

We've used Jewsons for years. They're almost always competitive, but if we do find something cheaper elsewhere they always either match or better it.
We have a good personal relationship with the staff.

So true, I had a guy many years ago.

Came in as branch manager at my second nearest Jewson (15 mins further)

He had staff ring around to drum up business.
I said No - not interested and that they're piss taking bastards.

He came to the phone, spent 10 minutes asking my turnover, what I used, what do I pay etc. etc

He set up terms that beat Wickes and B&Q by about 15%

This lasted for about 5 or 6 months.

He had that branch flying, he got headhunted and taken elsewhere, may have been promoted within.

A little while after, terms were pulled and went back to s**t.

I’ve got a branch in spitting distance from my house. Generally avoid as I’ve always thought too expensive, but tbh, never set up an account. Needed some dumpy bags of mot and gravel recently and urgently so popped in and tbf they were good on price and delivered same day…so perhaps they are licking their wounds a bit and obviously not rushed off their feet. Travis seem to be a bit more competitive too lately.

Saying that, one thing that really pees me off about both of them (only relate to my local branches) is the customer service. Bottom line is that I want stuff in stock and good prices, but compared to some of the newer competitors…they’re living in the dark ages. Jewsons for example, have about 6 blokes sat at their desks set back from the counter. 9 times out of ten, they’ll stay sat at their desk and not come to the counter and just set the card machine from their computer. Just comes across as fooking lazy.

TP…guys in the yard ok. Go inside and stand at the counter and blokes sat at their desks. No acknowledgment or that eye contact and nod to say “be with you in a minute mate”…then eventually they get up and serve you but seems like a chore.

Newer players on the block, nice and friendly, nothing too much trouble, complimentary food on the counter, drinks machine, call you by your name. I’m not really bothered by that as it comes down to price most of the time, but it’s basic human psychology and they will win the battle.
