Leaving Mono open.

When Im using sand and cement and I put the straight edge on it leave it open to help it set.

Has anyone ever tried it with the serrated edge on mono?
Just a thought, didn't know if it would help it set a little quicker and the teeth marks would be scraped anyway.
My edge is not as sharp as it first was so doesn't dig deep.
 
serrated or if we use a featheredge we turn it on its back so as to rule off not rule in.
 
I have done it once on an average winters day,only 10m2 by hand so managed to get it flat with the serrated just went over it a few times at different directions,no I section just left it,went to another job and went back at 5 to scrape,it was scrape able and came up fine,I'm not sure if it helped much as I haven't had chance to try it again since,(it wouldn't be something I'd attempt with any panel of any size,I beam all the way).

I'm only on about leaving it open to see if it sets quicker.
Once set I'd still i beam then scratch just thinking If it will set the render a bit quicker by not closing in with spat.
Flattening would be done with the serrated.
 
As above, you'll waste more material than needed. If your looking for a way to speed your mono jobs up get a machine.

If labour time saved is greater than material cost which wouldn't be much over an average house of say 100m2 then it would be worth it.

I'm thinking of winter when accelerator will help but still not super quick.

Have thought about a machine.
Need to find out some more info but thinking the salesman will tell me what I want to hear.
I only do domestic and a mix of traditional and mono.

Any tips?

We haven't touched a plastering job since March, it depends on what direction you want to go, we are now taking rendering work on for next spring so possibly over Xmas and winter I will drop back inside.

Takes a long time to learn how to use a machine, we still haven't got it cracked and it will probably be next year before we are 100% with it, it has cost me a few bob, but that was down to mistakes I made, running gear too stiff eating r&s's & wasted render.

We only do domestics and it is still fooking hard graft, we finished at 10pm on Thursday and 9pm last night.

I would not go back to hand applying as its donkey work and nearly killed me, I had to hand apply about 10m2 the other day and it was a ball ache.

Seriously, without sounding off, I have turned over x2 since April this year than I did the whole of the previous tax year, and we are just a 1&1 gang.

If somebody took the machine off me, I'd be out of this game straight away.

I have the ritmo L, very good little machine and perfect for us when we use it properly.

Another thing to note, where I live I have rigsby about 5 mile up the road who helps me out with stuff a lot and Les Lord about 4 mile the other way who I regularly go and see for my monthly training and bollocking, so without those 2's help and advice I would have been right up the s**t creek

I remember my phone calls to Les when I first got my machine , I think if I lived that close to him at the time he would have moved ! Glad you doing well mate
 
Thanks, yes it is still hard graft and what we have struggled with this year is treating mono and running it through the same as I was taught to hand apply, too thick, which has cost me.

Iv only last week realised (was told) that we need to spray wetter, which was a bit daunting when you see how thin les showed me to spray it, but you live and learn. I have hand applied the majority of monos but now have to forget that technique and learn the proper way to spray them all.
 
You got it mate "wetter is better " lol , I normally spray in two passes easy to rule of that way as we are only a 2 man gang , so I spray rule and spat
 
Ha ha, you know your doing something wrong when he eyeballs you and say "whose taught you to do that"

I went up in April for training with my ritmo L, he started cutting wires up, throwing bits down the shop.

Good guy, straight to the point, no bullshit

Any of you based near bristol?
If I think about it more and get serious I'd rather come and learn with people who have had them a while and know how to use them.
I'd happily labour and learn for nothing but good advice!

To be Honest that is the best way to do it ,try as many machines as you can ,but you might find it hard to get someone on your door step teaching you mate
