so , 9 weeks ago a neighbour knocked on my door and asked me to do a small skimming job , at very short notice, so me being me I did it went out of my way etc because he was a neighbour, now 9 weeks further on I have just being paid,...... approx. 10 years ago I did some work for a relation who also was a very late payer , we do not speak now,.... and an electrician I know did some work for his brother in law ,1,200 quid and he never got paid caused a whole heap of arguments/bad feelings/family falling out,...what is it with family/neighbours, who think they can treat you like this

Yep, know what you mean hector. Gave up a bit of Easter weekend over a few half days. Done it for pocket money too!! Still not been paid, thing that pisses me of more is I gave a weekend of stock cars up to help them out.
 
I find it worse to accept money off them for smallish jobs
Got 100 off sister in law for 2 days work, I said I didn't want anything, but she put that 100 in van.
Her being her, I know in her head she has paid me for the job!

did a job for a good friend a couple of years ago. charged cost for materials and 2 days money for a lad i had working for me at the time. he paid me a tenner over the costs and still says every now and again that i charge a good days money...

the materials and help came free with a bowl of cereal
 
I don't mind helping the family out. But it's friends mates rates that piss me off. The amount of jobs I've done that I hardly make a penny from . Give them the price and what they are saving and they give you the exact money n not even a beer Fckn pisses me of and from now on its a price like it or lump it get some c**t else if they don't like it
 
Family are the ones who hand you the hoover or mop when you ask for it ;)
Also you have the last hit on and all the gear half packed up and they announce they have another wee patch they forgot about , that hawkful you threw out is of course set.

Did a job recently for a mate of mine.
It wasn't so much the lack of earnings that bothered me.
It was him trying to do a bit to help me out?!! Trying to form corners etc where they had knocked walls down.
Spent half a day just taking out and putting right the help he gave me!!!
 
I was asked to skim a bedroom at one our "friends" I was there 3 days as it was hallway bathroom as well... no offer of money....

They asked me to come back and skim the master bedroom I was like ok.... did it and no offer of paying... bearing in mind I had a 2 hour drive each way....

They asked me to do downstairs lounge kitchen hallway I told them I could not get there for 3 weeks... they found someone else :-)

Did you mention a price beforehand? Immediate family get jobs for free. Friends and the rest of the family get charged normal rates although ive just done a full house board ceilings skim all rooms for a mate at a slightly discounted rate but thats a one off

If they would of offered I would have said nope...

I think someone on here pointed out if they would not take a few days off work to help you out then why should you...

Do no favours owe no favours
 
I'd rather do favours for family & friends, they don't owe me, just a way of treating people close to you.
I know people who would help me out with a click of the fingers, gladly.

If I asked the aforementioned sis in law for some help shed make out she was parting the Red Sea for me. That 100 quid cleared her conscience!

Yup... but for them to expect it is a different thing...
 
I would help if they started a room and it went pear shaped but if they are having an extension or spending a fortune or new kitchen and bathroom f**k that they are getting charged coz I guarantee the £600 quid they saved on you will be spent on nicer taps and a bigger TV, for them to boast about when it's all finished lol

If i have another spread work for me then they get paid for the day or days and vice versa, non of this i do a day for you then you do a day for me rubbish!
 
I fell out with my Brother cos he wanted his kitchen ceiling skimming. He got the hump when I said get fuked cos your a tight c**t n only come round hear when you want something thing doing for nowt
 
Did my mums house for free, also my dads, also did my grandads council bungalow for free a week after Henry boot had "plastered" it, I got a job for 6 months doing that too

Charged my brother £250 for kitchen & £400 for staircase

Charged my aunt £180 for her hallway ceiling
 
Yup same my sister still owes me £ 600 for some work we done cheap as well
Says she is sorting it!!! It has only been 3 yrs :hueco:

Least it's not just me who feels this way then lol. I really don't mind helping out close friends or family that's fine but like friends who I see once a year or just sitting with going to the football it's them who annoy me . I'm saving them a few hundred pound a like if I say £180 for job inc material they are like superb mate cheers . Bang £180 on the button instead of even rounded it of to £200 what made it worse was the fact he won 2k the week before in bookies . He text me last week asking about doing his hall and a says yes it's £xxxx never heard fck all back lol
 
This week had someone I know who've been helping out on the odd ceiling etc ... gets to job Tuesday no materials / prep wasnt done he mentioned he'd sort .... Gets back in van ... rang him and said cheers for losing me a days work ... don't bother ringing me again .... offered me money for the day and wages to do it .... just gets awkward now as I know them both well and I don't want to take the money he offered to cover my day as id feel bad even though its pissed me off ..... not sure how really when I turned up when I said .... might just swerve it altogether
 
you must be one of our southern friends john,... never mind,... your friends in the north will guide and help you and anybody else who calls it a hawk, this very difficult embarrassing problem can be overcome but it needs determination and self control, starting Monday call it a handboard, all day every day, your health will improve, concentration levels will be better, you will become more confident ,more pride no longer will people point and talk in hushed tones as you walk by, you will gain more respect,.... there are trained specialists out there doctors/lecturers who will help you and all our southern brethren with this sad problem, we in the
