Morning All,

As many of you have already seen, we are pleased to announce that NELA has now introduced the Black Edition to the market

Some have said its a gimmick, or a marketing ploy and its simply just a black handle. No doubt there has been some great marketing in this, however, there are some key fundamental differences with the new trowel that has been launched, not just a pretty handle.

After several months of testing various trowels, dimensions and widths, we have launched the new Black Edition FLEX, they key differences to note are;

NELAFLEX MKII Gold Edition has a 0.3mm blade with a width of 4.3"
NELA MediFLEX has a 0.4mm blade and a width of 4.9"

With the new Black Edition, it has a 0.4mm blade with a total width of 4.72"

The differences may seem small on paper, but it totally changes the performance of the trowel. This new version has all the benefits of a FLEX yet has more rigidity. Alongside these differences the quality of Steel is higher, increasing the price slightly, but creating a more robust and durable trowel which should not wear down as fast as previous models



















Also coming into the range is the new NELA EDGE, the new design of the spatula allows for various blades to be used, both Metal and Plastic, with various thicknesses to suit the application.
With interchangeable blades, a high quality support arm, this really is a fantastic product which has been priced very well.

So you made flex trowels and now your making them more rigid like the trowels we had in the 1st place before flexis where on the scene wait there hang on ????

No, we have always had a rigid trowel, we have simply redeveloped the trowel to suit better. It’s still a Flex trowel.....
 
I only need one trowel and a plastic and thats enough for me.
I have a nela thin thingy i dont know what its called and i just cant get on with it so it just sits in the van.
 
I know and I've received great service from you guys in the past. Just a suggestion that the wheel is constantly being reinvented

@Plasterers1StopShop : regarding the Nela black spat, it's now a couple of months later, and I see them listed at various online stockists (including yourselves), but a deathly silence about spare blades - no mention whatsoever.

Given the fact that steel spat blades are SO easily damaged, I resent the fact that several spat brands make it difficult (or, in some cases, practically impossible) to obtain spare blades. It's environmentally irresponsible and it's disrespectful to customers who, it seems, are expected to re-invest in an entire new spat everytime their blade gets a kink in it.

Ox is a notable exception. Tyzack/Spear&Jackson also appear to be an exception.

I'll concede that I dislike the shape of the handle of the Speedskim - it seems Ox spent several years carefully developing the characteristics of their blades, but were unable to devote more than 5 dollars and 5 minutes to designing the shape of the aluminium extrusion in such a way that it could be comfortable to grip at a range of different angles, and whilst applying sufficient pressure without occasionally accidentally pressing on the blade itself. It's very badly designed, because the whole point of using a spat is to reduce fatigue and strain on the muscles, tendons, and joints of the user, but the thumbs (especially) and fingers have to apply much more pressure on the Speedskim handle, to maintain reliable grip and spat pressure, than would be necessary if the handle were designed in a more ergonomic shape, like numerous competitors have successfully done.

Refina will (as far as I know) only let you replace a blade if you ship the whole spat back to them, for them to fit it and then ship it back to you (what an overly-controlling self-serving approach). These rebranded L'Outil Parfait spats are available under so many different names and colours, around Europe, so I don't know if Refina are placing this restriction on replacement blades, or if it's demanded by L'Outil Parfait themselves - I haven't noticed Marshalltown offering spare blades for their recently-released version.

Eze spats are not 'easy' to find all sizes of replacement blades in UK stock (unless someone can point me to a stockist that does hold all blade sizes reliably in stock).

Level 5 spats (or the outrageously-overpriced DeWalt rebadged version) don't seem to have good availability in the UK, as yet, let alone spare blades.

Superprof Comfort profile spats don't seem to have easy access to spare blades in the UK, either.


In short, although I can see that the Nela Black spat has a suitably ergonomic handle, I see no reason for anyone to invest in one, given the fragility of steel spat blades, unless spare blades are made available to the UK market, up-front, instead of vague promises. Without spares available, why would I choose a Nela Black spat over a competitor who does support their customers with availability of spare blades? It would be just another spat amongst a sea of competitors, that doesn't solve any problem that competing spats don't.

With all that said, I can see that the front edge of th Nela spat handle is specifically designed to enable easy blade changing:

...so I'm hoping you'll be able to tell me happy news that you have real stock of spare blades in the UK, soon, but if not, I'm sure you'll understand my reasons for looking to a competing brand, instead, next time I need to buy a steel-blade spat. At less than £20 for a spare blade, the Tyzack looks fair value, even though it's plastic handled.

A quick response to your valid points:

1. You can’t change SUPERPROF Blades

2. You can change EZE Spat blades, 400mm, 600mm, 800mm and 1000mm are the only stocked versions with us as the larger sizes are impossible to change - I’m confident we have stock of all but will check

3. NELAEDGE spare blades will be readily available in the coming weeks, we have had a huge volume of sales and pre orders on the EDGE. We are still waiting for the spare blades, Pole and attachment also - all due very soon.

I I havnt used the black nela
my brother says he lays in bed and sends his nela to work now lol
 
Brought a Nela edge spatula and the blade was damaged in the box on delivery , was fuming didn’t even notice till laid my first coat in

Thanks - my remarks were primarily aimed at you in your capacity as Nela's main UK agent, rather than at you in your broader capacity as a retailer of numerous brands.

However, with regard to your Eze spat blades - for quite some time, now, the options for all but 1.5m have been greyed-out on your website:

In any case, I (and probably @Ashleymcduff, too) am pleased to hear spare Nela blades are imminent. It looks like a nice product, and, so long as spare blades actually materialise, I'll consider buying a 1m spat in the coming months.
