New lad done a good job?

New Member
Hello all - took on a new lad for a job on a garage conversion, not sure how direct to be on feedback. Not a plasterer by trade myself.

Added a few photos… edge around internal door not fully filled filled in, looks like one coat only in some places, been lazy in getting into harder to reach places (not too hard to reach, just top of a slightly curved wall) / looks like he forgot to finish off some bits entirely.

he wants paying of course too, I’m going to give me half of what was agreed and tell him he needs to go back and finish.

What do you think?

he got the whole lot done in a day (including d & d) to his credit, but quality in places is missing.

Video of the whole job… I am thinking I don’t even get him back in but just find a better man for the job. Question is how much should I pay him for his effort. He did graft all Sunday.

Clearly not very skilled and has taken on something a too big to be done in one go with his/her skill level.
Why did they try to do it in one day and why do you think that deserves credit. ( you don't have to answer that, its kind of a pointer). Were they also mixing up on their own?
Setting time has clearly got away from him before final floating. Has therefore rushed the job and botched it.
Suspect they didn't have the step-up to hand and and therefore missed the slightly curved bit - did you want a curved wall? - flat would mean extra coats and time.
Re edge of door frame? - how did you expect him to fill-in the huge packer gap? (Apologies if I have mis-understood what you meant).
I suspect you agreed a too low price and hence they felt they needed to get it done on one day - they might have been partly to blame for that by getting their price wrong (over confident and/or too high an opinion of what they are worth - not much).
Not sure if you are the client or the builder? - Either way - what made you take them on, did you check their experience level/ ask for some previous job refs? If you knew they were in-experienced/noobs and charitably wanted to give them a chance, then you need to do a bit of supporting reassuring and checking how they planned to do it/time nol an issue etc. (Uncharitably - were you just trying to save a buck and feck them - but you do not sound like that sort of cxxnt).
I think Smudger has nailed it in one.

appreciate the thorough assessment, good of you.

the lad took on the job saying he’s been loving his job and wants to go it alone, so needs to build up a reputation and so that’s why he’s come in cheaper. So went with it as I thought he’d do a great job to get word of mouth.

so how do I fix from here? Just find a more experienced chap and get them to start over? It sounds like this kid has got himself in too deep so getting him back to finish won’t solve anything…?

Well we all get it wrong sometimes, me more than most. I'd give him a chance to sort it, he must be feeling pretty crap and ashamed of obviously getting wrong.
It'll cost him and maybe he'll have to bring in a friend, but there is some cred/rep in being willing to come back and fix it and recognise/learn where it went wrong.
Lots of folk on here have admitted to returning to fix stuff and are not ashamed to admit it.

I've always thought that. How you sortout a problem is as important as how good a job you do in the first place.

Customer will always forgive you if you come back and put something right for them

No paid him yet, no. Told him it’s not up to scratch and that I’m more than happy for him to come over for us to run through it all in person and for him to have a second go. But I can’t sign it off as it stands and I’m worried he’ll botch the second attempt too. I’m in Leighton Buzzard mate. Happy to pay with cash and single malt
 
If you feel sorry for him and believe he can do it properly, tell him to redo just 1 wall first to see if he's able to get it to a good standard ?
If not get a price from a proper spread less the £700 owed for the s**t show towards it ?

I'm pretty sure that this is just another wind up thread, but if it isn't then you shouldn't be taking on building work. If you need to ask if this work is acceptable then you're as big a chancer as who did the plastering.

There’s more too it mate. I had a proper builder in to take on and manage the entire project - garage conversion, nothing insane - started off brilliantly, got half way, but now he’s gone belly up (even longer story) and taken my money with him. I’m 5 grand down on what was meant to be a 12 grand job. So this lads drops me a message saying he can finish my work, verified on MyBuilder, so I gave him a shot as his previous work looked spot on.

It's a fuking disgrace to the trade that I'd be giving him fuk all he'd oc been better taking 3cdays on it its still decent ££
 
Poor c**t probably supplied materials for £700.bet he got bartered down by client he's got cheapskate written all over him.serves him right

Mate, the fact you even said f**k Sake at 1:05 on the video says it all. He's not a Plasterer and if you get him back to try and fix that then you're reputation is heading down the swanny. He'll be off on his horse riding into the sunset and you'll be left with a s**t show to try and fix and a very unhappy customer. Rip it all off and start again, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Tradesman agreed on the price. There's no excuse to produce that. In fact whoever did that isn't a tradesman. Dread to think how pissed that dot and dab is if his skimmings that bad
