Yes bit of a risk after my double visit skimming response but worth it for the entertainment
Sounds like I disagree with " doing it right" as techniques , apart from nails to screws haven't appeared to have changed since I was a lad, in particular to overcome this problem ,
 
when we carry out contracts for a structural engineer for a ceiling with movement ,with not to big a span, the spec has been cross board with 15mm ply, with fixings every 100mm, then cross board with 15mm plasterboard and skim.

Yes but standard new builds are still boarded with the joints on a joist
 
standard practice to fit joints on a joist. a clerk of the works would have a baby if they saw anything else.

So as its always been done that way theirs no room for improvement and we all carry on and blame the chippies

Skimmed my neighbors extension and thats what he did. Walls and ceilings on new stud too. Thought it was overkill over kill at the time. The guys a joiner btw.

because ply is laminated in different directions it is very strong. this method is often used on up market builds.
 
Many years ago decided to take a knackered lath ceiling down and was amazed at the strength it gave , that got ply ,
