OMG.. you really are a re***d.. READ THE POST..... '' tiles IF securely fixed '' and a substrate is a surface that is usually recieving some kind of coating.. ie. tiles... dont be jealous, just because I am helping people look at tiling '' in my garage '' maybe you should come.. try and gain some experience before talking bollox aswell... yes, we know its better to strip the paper. ( you keep going on about this.. is it because its the only thing you actually know ? ) but back to reading the posts properly.. ITS ONE OF MY OWN FUKIN PROPEERTIES.... FFS... so if it fails, its no big deal...jesus fukin wept..

It's your house so you can of course do what you want with it. That doesn't make it right, and no amount of huffing and puffing changes that.

You think a substrate is a surface, and yet you call me a re***d. :rolleyes)

As for joining you to learn something, I'll pass thanks. I'm always up for learning something but that needs someone who has something to pass on.

Why does every thread on here these days end in bickering? Some cut an acceptable corner once in a while others claim they never do. I'm more inclined to believe someone who accepts there not perfect than someone who claims they do everything by the book.

I've known a lot of very good tradesmen but im yet to meet one who's never shaved a corner

Tiling over existing tiles and painted surfaces - Weber

There ya go Imago, read and learn.. this link is Weber ( saint goban ) you know the company that own British Gypsum.. people in our trade know this.. but you and your tiler might want to have a look ??

Yeah, thanks. It says they supply an adhesive to do it, it doesn't say that it's good practice, recommended or that existing tiles make a good substrate, so what's your point? I've never said it can't be done, just that it's a bodge, or bad practice.

BTW, the paragon of best practice that you tried to use to prove a point about poor prep being acceptable and being able to go over surface materials with their adhesive to save time. Is that the company that produced and launched that other wonder product to save time and prep? What was it called? Uni-Finish. How did that corner cutting work out?

My point in all this is that yes all sorts of material can be plastered or tiled over, and lots of people do. That doesn't mean it's right, best practice, or to be recommended. @cassie jumped on me calling it a bodge and tried to argue that it isn't. It is, and any good tradesman will see it as such. Are bodges used? Yes. Do they sometimes work? Yes. Is it sometimes necessary to do because a customer hasn't the money for a full job? Yes, if you work for those customers. However, it is still a bodge.

Google '' tiling over tiles '' then you will learn..thicko... im guessing your a bit of an '' allrrounder/handyman ?? by the way... your still argueing the toss even tho you read ( you can read right ? ) the Weber page ??

I've removed loads of "welded on" woodchip when people have said they can't get it off lol :RpS_wink:

Well I've worked on several jobs for him & he's the total opposite of what you imagine him to be lmao :rolleyes)

I imagine him to be someone who employs other trades, as he has no clue, certainly comes across as that...

Ah the qualifications and experience "dick waving" game? OK, I'll play.

So, worked with my dad as a kid during the '70s on civil engineering jobs such as bridges, tunnels and large concrete structures. City and Guilds with a five year apprenticeship in construction plant and power generation. City and Guilds level four in electrical design and installation (along with the usual part 'P' melarky), city and quilds level three in carpentry. Five years and an NVQ in structural steel erection, NVQ in carpentry, Prince 2 accredited project management. Add to that lot over thirty years in the construction industry working on and running jobs for large companies both in the UK and overseas before starting my own company. So I think I'm qualified in a little bit more than "talkin shite" although I'm pretty handy at that too :RpS_biggrin:

Well that's me, so what qualifications were you waving around like they're impressive again?

not really mate, nowt wrong with having qualifications ??

Not at all no just the timing of his reply that made me laugh thats all.

Im not judging either of ya. I've skimmed over it like i've said. I've also told mates it can't be done when its them thats had to strip it.

I've got an nvq2 in plastering so **** you both.

Well I have no qualifications or skill in plastering or tiling. So I pay professionals who are good, experienced tradesmen in those areas rather than 'have a go'.
