Problem with plaster - bumps and blowing

Work for 50% of the time for twice the money
I know alot of plasterers in my area, we all charge pretty much the same, if I suddenly charged double the price for a double bedroom reskim I would work 0% of the time I think

Have you tried it?

I dont care what others charge... never have done never will
I wouldn't want to charge £600 to reskim double bedroom walls. Could I get some work? Yes, but I don't think it would be value for money when I know the other plasterers would do same standard job for half the price. Just not something I'd want to do. Can see why some would though. Like a decent days work tbh, or I'd be bored shitless

What would u generally charge 4 say a full bedroom ceiling overboard and re-skim walls..standard bedroom say about 15m2 ceiling etc, around your way

I dont understand why the public get grief on here... especially with the amount of work that comes our way...

Also why would anybody pay a plasterer to remove wallpaper??? If I was paid to remove wallpaper I would then get a labourer to come in and do it so I dont understand how wall paper removal is classed as prep...

As far as I am concerned the wall was stripped and the "plasterer" came in and was happy to "their" prep and was happy to skim it....

From the looks of it they got caught out by the wallpaper paste and and it shafted him...

The fix for me would be to scrape off the blisters and fill and sand... in fact in an hour that wall would be looking perfect...

It is only plaster :D
Looks like the so called plasterer used a out of the box flexi and its torn the skimmed dragged

I thought you were referring to the price of the product. Well yes, doubling the labour price of a 1 day job because it becomes 2 days would probably lose me alot of work lol

It's not two days though is it? Takes a couple of hours to paint the job green

But what do you do for the rest of the day? Go and ask the next customer if they'd mind clearing the room and you dustsheeting up to grit their room to come back 2 days later? It's just not practical unless it's on big jobs

Guess so.

I dunno. I'm not a specialist plasterer and I only ever work within a mile or two of home - always been that way for me. In fact, I didn't do one job last year that wasn't walking distance from my house.

So for me yes, I suppose that's exactly how I do it. Drop off one job a bit early and go and prep for tomorrow. I guess if you were all over town then you'd have to swing your day for it and charge accordingly.

Anyway, it's different for me. Every f**k*r round here's got my number so people just ring me to get it done. They don't really bother getting other quotes.

If you like but it's the truth. I said last year that I set out to be the go to guy for the Dublin landlords in this particular area and that's happening just like I hoped.

I keep my prices sensible and have a good reputation. I do what I say when I say and ALWAYS answer my phone.

Ringing me saves you calling anyone else so I've currently got one appointment to keep with an electrician and collect a key off an exiting tenant - from doing that, I got the laminate flooring that the landlord decided to put in.

Helped another fella get his kitchen spayed and wrapped - looks like new for £750 - customer is spending what he saved on a new paint job with me.

One bathroom and kitchen to re tile on a recommendation.

Two flats to renovate completely because I have keys to others that I've done here so I'm able to let customers in to see the other work that I've done and give people detailed answers from almost identical jobs that I've just done.

Paint job on a renovation on the back of a recommendation off the management company.

Couple more renovations in the pipeline for the management company fella who's buying property round here.

And so I'm always about, looking smart and being helpful. I always say hello to anyone who looks like they're here on business so by the time I've done all that then something else will have come up and if it hasn't, then the weather will have brightened up and it'll be time to do some work on the outside of the buildings.

Up here for thinking.

Say again ?

Here we go again. Where you based? And haven't you just gone self employed?

Kind of. I mostly work for one guy on a self employed basis. He makes a bit of a profit and in turn supplies me with work and any support that I might need - which isn't very much.

I'm always free to do my own work or even employ him if circumstances dictate.

What's that got to do with knowing the prices up here?

Well if you haven't been in the game long and mostly work for one plasterer how can you know what others are earning? I assume you just charge the same day rate as your mate? There'll be plasterers on good money around you, there always is

Yup use to work for me as well....

Go prep a job in the afternoon and then turn up the following morning lash it on then move on to the next....

Allowed opportunity if the job was not ready to plan something for the next day...

We all do things different and do what works for us... but being organised is a skill we all need and most of us lack

I can see your point of view @Robbo123 if you’ve never had a problem with pva there’s no need to use anything else. I Just gave the grit a go about 15 years ago and liked that it was just one application.
Pva sometimes on shiny takes ages to go tacky or on very high suction needs two or three coats etc..You can defo still get a small room done in a day with microgobetis or PRB grit as it dries very quick but a decent size room 9/10 times it’s the ceiling as well so usually overboard it and paper tape joins then grit walls put beads up then go home. Next day skim ceiling and maybe a wall dependent on my hangover lol then walls in afternoon but there still maybe half day to come back to.
In afternoon go grit another job, pick up materials or enjoy time with family. I still rate pva but been using my method and making good money for ages, but as you say can be done quicker I think.

Has my ceiling skimmed after I removed the wallpaper.

looked good until I painted it and I saw small spots every where. Also the plaster got small holes in two area (well like a blister I popped).

Got the same guy to do two internal walls. Same thing happened apart from the wall feels bumpy. I’m yet to paint the wall so I know the painting hasn’t caused the issues.

The wall was a bit dodgy to begin with - the plaster kept on blistering when I painted. New Polyfilla would fall of when I painted. So I removed as much that was loose and plaster PVA, left it a week and came back.
The wall looks ok - plaster is sticking to the walls I’m just concerned when I paint it will look bad.
He should of gone to specsavers
