Hes pretty old school, doesn't want dabbed even though I told him its cheaper labourwise and more progressive.

Ive done quite a few single rough and set walls but never a whole room a time so after some advice.......


The walls are thermolite blocks, would you pva or just light spray with water before hardwalling them or do em dry?

Opposites.... Ive always gone by you treat hardwalling a wall as you would skimming, I.e opposite walls first and any wall that isn't touching another then skim when slighty tacky then bring the otherwalls in after? Effectively lay on 2 opposite walls in 2 separate rooms then skim them after? Next day finish the rooms if possible?

Time.. Hardwall in the morning and skim in the afternoon?


Sorry for the questions lads, I'm comfortable doing it but dont want to pisssss myself up on the price!

The thermalites will love you for it.......
Render today, skim tomorrow........ahhh the good old days........skimming on a nice "green" suction.........mmmmmm

Believe me mate if I could I would. That's all I ever do unless boarding. Never been a fan of hardwall or bonding.
 
First of all Roryston explain to the builder the situation ref suction on blocks etc. then tell him how you will go about it using the method of his choosing. If you can float and set one wall then you can do all walls surly just repeat the same process . To control the suction i would give the blocks a tight scratch coat first the turn around and float using box screeds once done carry on dropping back to rub up as you go.No you don't have to do opposites just get as much floated in a day as you can . Next day pva what you have floated and skim . Don't worry about the warning of not to use pva on hard wall , i have done it loads of times and never had any probs .
 
Don't get the skimming sand and cement the next day as it will crack .i know this as i worked for a damp coursing firm years ago and we always skimmed the next day, it always cracked. Rub up well and leave a few days.

Box screeds? Is that what you lot call a metal feather edge?
 
Box screed are when you float a strip down each side of the wall then one along the bottom and th the top using each screed to rule off as you go forming a box. then you fill in the middle using the ruled box screeds.

That's the exact way I do my s&c internals mate, , never knew there was a correct term for it though. !

Green suction ...... term used by builders in a hurry to get job done. Don't be gullible, not worth the risk. Least a day in between. As a domestic spread I have pulled off acres of skim from sand and cement, i'm really bored of the blisters now.
 
We had a job where customer wanted sand and cement two of my lads didn't have a bloody clue .
I had to go and screed it all out for them first so all they had to do is fill in the screeds ffs in the same week one of them wanted a bloody pay rise the cheeky t**t .
The truth is young uns don't know how to rule a wall off amongst other things they take a two year course pick up a certificate and are classed as qualified plasterers . Most of them think plastering stops at skimming .
 
The first thing we do when we get to a job is find out where electric and water are whilst the young uns are wafting they're phones in the air looking for 3G lol

i know that everyone needs to be able to carry out all of the craft just to be able to survive the boom and bust periods that gov. put on us.
in the john major government i had to go floor screeding for a couple of years at Lakeside shopping mall. then ewi for London councils, working in the Netherlands. there should have been enough work in Essex and London to keep us going but we were screeding in Southampton, ewi in Berkshire, running about all over the country.

Thats a great wee trick, use if myself the odd time, great for plumbing shite walls, used to do a lot of expensive bathrooms and was the easiest way to get it spot on for tiling.
 
Floated hall stairs and landing in sand and cement last week and its a better job, advised against boards due to cold spots so it has its place.
