Speed Awareness

Had to go on one of these this morning. 8 -12 . It was actually quite eye opening, to be honest. Loads of facts that youre just not aware of. Did the little test at the beginning and got all the questions wrong. Jesus. I can honestly say it should make me a safer driver. I was only doing 36 in a 30 zone, so im not a boy racer or anything. First time ive ever been stopped by the police. In a van or car. One thing i didnt know was the speed limits for van drivers are 10mph lower than cars for certain roads:

single carriageway 50 not 60 like cars
dual carriageway 60 not 70 like cars

So all the time ive been doing say 3 over the limit ive been doing 13 over the limit.

Another interesting thing was when you see motorbikes weaving through traffic its actually what theyre meant to do by law. Or allowed to do. To ease up congestion. Still dont think id do that. Especially down someones passenger side in case they turn left and dont see you. Motorcyclists are 1% of the traffic on the road but account for 20% of fatalities. 365 deaths a year. 70% of which arent their fault.

Me too mate went on one everyone in a mood but actually did me good the best tip I got there was drive in 3rd gear to stick at 30 mph, did they show you that crash thing ? The worst one in u.k for fatalities, it does make you think, that was another tip I got from it if there is a pile up don't stop carry on driving because others could pile into u parked up

Yep everyone should know the light panel van ie 3.5 tonne gross is less than cars. North Yorkshire police are really cracking down on speeders, there isn't a single fixed camera in the whole of North Yorkshire there all mobile. I got caught doing 56 in a 50 in the van last year twice in 3 days it would normally be a 60 road but because I was in a van it was 50mph. Course for the first 3 points and 200 fine for the other.

Didn't learn a jot on my course it's all money, 50 in a van now in 60 zones is a joke the speed limits where set back when vans had drum breaks, I got done on a big open road on a summers day, doing 56 mph.

I somehow have never got caught speeding :D I have been stopped a few times but my charm has got me off :D

I did an article for plasterers news https://www.plasterersnews.com/van-drivers-get-caught-out-know-your-limits/

A lot of car drivers think that bikers filtering is illegal... in fact it does ease congestion but it also helps keep us alive... how many cars do you see that get shunted in traffic, if that happens on a bike you are f**k*d!!! There is a bit of etiquette with filtering for bikers and I tend to only filter up to 10 mph after that I dont :D

agree with that totally!!!

I think speed limits dumb down driving... I think you should drive to the conditions of the road and if it is safe to do a bit more then that is fair enough...

i think it would be a good idea to get a man to walk in front of the van with a red flag ! talk about progress.

I'll reduce that number at least twice:rolleyes:, when stating it publicly ;)

My opinion is that every vehicles on the road shoulď only do 50miles an hour becouse ther so many idiot on the road and so many lifes lost becouse people cant handle speed

Speed ......doesn't kill! It's a fact ! There are too many other factors that contribute .....and, speed is one of them , but in the company of a phone , alcohol, drugs etc. As a biker I can tell when you over the speed limits your concentration is on 200%, wherekeeping up with the limits just kills your instincts. My point is everyone is diferent, but still there should be order on the road.

i spend a good 10 hours a week on the roads thats alot in a year ....believe me lane hoggers are a big big problem.
on motorways you should go with the flow and keep left until over taking i feel safer in the fast lane.

only a biker will understand this... and its proven that bikers make better car drivers as well as we are taught to be way more aware :D

I drive fairly slowly just Pootle along as the long que of traffic behind me get piss ed off! Ten to 9 is the worst as the 4x4 moms and reps racing to get to work for 9 so I slow down. :)

Me too, I poodle along not pootle , stuff um I ain't in a rush 30mph most of the time , if someone wants to drive up my arse they are welcome ,

People do die being hit at 30 mph too never mind 50 mph

Yeah thats fair enough... I have phases where I am a stickler for being bang on the money and I dont ride my bike at weekends now if I can help it :D

Sure you did . If you are up to speed you can't control, what is the ground for an accident- the bad decision you made or the speed itself?

Adding to this argument, your doing 70 and say a dear runs out, you die.... or your doing 50 the dear runs out and there is a much bigger chance of survival.

Same with cars pulling out in front of you

Also the whole 30 thing, kid jumps out on front of you and you hit them because it unavoidable, if you were doing 30 survival chance of kid is much higher then if you were doing 40. So when you think about it speed does kill because there will always be accidents. Be it your fault or not.

I would rather biker do filter, as at least they won't get shunted like you said. Like to see there is a limit to your filtering...... Shame many other bikers think "filtering" through traffic doing 60+ is legal and ok, had many heart stopping moments like that.

to be honest that is where driving to the conditions comes in to play... unlikely to find a dear in the day time but near where I live there is wild horses so that becomes a factor also if you see one animal there will likely be another coming...

AT junctions and crossroads a driver should be prepared to stop as a biker I was taught to move about my lane to make me as visible as possible to other road users (driving to conditions)

On a straight bit of road with no junctions and good clear sight you could open her up.... most of my fun on a bike comes from the twists and turns and so doing 190 mph is not for me...

The other thing to think about is that police are trained to high level and some are allowed to drive at high speed... a lot of bikers are trained to similar standard... I ride with a number of ex coppers and they can also ride at the speed limit but make progress and people assume they are breaking the speed limit because for them to keep up they need to be doing more than the speed limit :D

I also believe accidents dont happen and there is no such thing as an accident... along the way someone f**k*d up.... not like a meteorite fell out the sky

I think the police recommend not filtering over 20 mph :D if someone is going to switch lanes on you they wont look your hit whether you are doing 60 or 20... the car driver would still be at fault :D
