There are differing opinions as to whether the plaster suppliers use an additive to control the setting times of finish in Summer and Winter. Do you believe they tamper with it to suit the seasons or not?

Heard of the summer / winter thing years ago but never really took much notice tbh, then when I joined here had seen posts on it , but still undecided, can't say I notice a difference between seasons

With the weather in this country i cant see how they could tell when its gonna get warm and stay warm so for that reason i think its one of them urban myths.

not sure about seasonal bubs but i know they can alter setting times :RpS_thumbup:

Yeah I don't doubt it, but imagine if (for example) British Gypsum were getting feedback from their customers (US!) about the setting times playing up and saying it was the weather to blame. By the time their 'altered' product hit the walls to suit the reported conditions the great British weather would have changed again anyhow :-0

i know mate like whats said above, the production times just wouldnt coinside with weather its to up n down

Then on top of that you have different backgrounds so i doubt they could suit the weather and every different job by every different plasterer :)

Yep....Just about the only consistent background that I know of is [fresh] plasterboard, so if the manufacturers wanted to market a product with varying setting times they could have a guideline something like "Sets in 2/3/4 hours" (Grade 2/3/4) on pb at 20 degrees or whatever is deemed to be the optimum temperature...............maybe I've had too many beers :RpS_thumbup:

I think this might be a good time to go on a clay offensive drive Paul? Don't hear much complaints bout settin times and gritty fatty clay! Don't miss a niche in the Market? Today take on bg? Tomorrow the world ? The zombies may follow:RpS_sneaky::RpS_thumbup:

i think its just due to change in the weather

...humidity and all that , rather than change in the
material

theres no option to vote 'dont know'
they might do thats prob why theres a few months date on it to take it to the next season

It's physically impossible but I doubt it's stopped them in the past
I'd vote yes they do

What about up and down the country it could be snowing one end and sunny the other end? it would be just too much bother to bag certain bags for certain parts of the country for certain types of jobs for certain types of plasterers for certain types of backgrounds for certain types of wisks for certain types of water but then again i couldnt be 100% certain :)

Strange how you can buy 2 bags from different places with similar dates on and they behave totally different, on the same site, same boards, same day.

it takes the same time every time, i set timer on my phone!! 18m.46s im very scared of over mixing because i know it can fnck the mix up

the multi ive got at the mo is ok to use not brilliant but its very rubbery???? finishes ok though just a bit harder work

I know exactly what you mean, the latest batch of board finish we recieved is rubbery too. Can't think of a better way to describe it. It almost feels like theres a couple of pints of PVA in it.

It goes on ok, then the flatten and first wet trowel are horrible. Second wet works nice as does the dry trowel to finish.

same mate once its set up a bit for the second trowel all the rubberyness (for want of a better word) has gone, im finding it very fatty aswell seem to spend more time keeping the trowel clean than actually working the plaster at the mo haha, but like i said it does finish ok just harder work than it has to be though
