Hello, I have been rendering a new timber frame building that has had riblath fixed to 25mm battens. Finished coat is already showing signs of movement. Small hair line cracks and horizontal hair line cracks where the lath is over lapped maybe. Any thoughts?

Thin coat render, mesh

my thoughts exactly warrior my good friend.

I got nothing against people doing it and I aint saying that in theory it dont work but this method is usually used for a cheaper option. as long as all involved are aware that crack could and nearly always do appear.

for timber framed you will never beat a hi polymer/acrylic base with mesh. doing one myself right now

whats the spec for that mate

What about a renovation paint designed to cover cosmetic cracking from parex etc, can't remember the name though

best way is to use an external insulation render board or an external render carrier board these are designed to receive the thin coat render system basecoat (hi polymer/synthetic/acrylic mortar) you use the mesh in with the base and then a textured colour coat goes over the top for the finish.

Maybe you could have used a fibre glass mesh bedded into you scratch coat. The lath is just a way of securing render to the substrate, by incorporating fibre glass mesh into you scratch coat you are strengthening the render. also Having a 5mm topcoat with a float finish means there is less weight on the system and the strength is very close to the surface.
