I was always told internal sc only needs 1 coat anyway?

when i am floating an internal be it sand and cement or hardwall. i apply a coat all over the wall then lay the wall in with a second coat it will then rule off easy. if you just one coat the wall when you go to rule off it will pull the floating and it is not easy to rule off.

Again, surely that's 1 coat 2 passes. I know what you mean though

OK so here's my thought on this.

I do miles of DPC work so the bottom 1m in s+c. I will normally scratch coat about a meter then, straight away top coat the same meter rule it off then move on scratch coating a meter topping a meter and so on.

I consider this one coat work. I only do this to kill the worst of the suction to make it easier to rule off.

Only time I don't do this is on tanking when you need to let the scratch stiffen up to stop it sliding about or if its thin say under 8mm.

When I used to labour for a bloke quite a few years ago, we used to splatter the wall with a wet 2/1 mix the day before, then S/C and rule off and a ruff float in 1 and multi finish the day after that.
heavy work but lot cheaper on materials.

i agree thats why i do it with acouple of hour in between and a completely fresh mix.

if i am floating on blocks like thermalite i would 2 coat 1 wall at a time. on low suction like leca i would put a couple of walls on before laying in.

Anything up to about 15mm goes on in one coat. Most of my S&C work over the years has been on aircrete type blocks but the suction isn't a problem at all as I use the box screed method. By putting on smaller areas before ruling off anything taken off the wall is still fresh and usable.

Ok it appears unbeknown to me iv also been one coating my skimmimg aswell.

2mm of skim is a bit different to over half inch of sand & cement render marra.

I did a job in an old cottage after a flood few years ago it was only a metre high so had to be built out to existing it was around 40mm -50mm thick of render in places so how would you put this on? Just interested like mate :-)

Do you patch and blend into the existing when skimming it or go over the whole wall?
if I get this sort of work I always prefer the latter.
