Gentlemen, have the chance to pick up a pallet of out of date (14/2/16) uni- finish for £4.99 a bag. Will be 4 weeks out of date before we use it. It's been properly stored and is still wrapped in poly.
What are your thoughts, take a chance or steer well clear?
Thanks in advance, Paul.

I'm stuffed whatever I say, if I say yes i get slated by certain people so I be honest I would try a few bags then if it's ok then sorted.
It will go one way or the other ,same with all finishes I have used board out of date and it hung but troweled up ok and other board finishes out of date and it troweled up crap and was a mess.
Just a shame everyone including me is waiting for the out of date price to buy it.
I have used out of date unifinish a few times and been fine on trowel up and finish but have read people saying it hung for 5 hours.i don't know if that was true or not or if it was just the slater brigade having a go.

Yep,
Even though there is always seems pallets left at b n q s there is a lot of people using it that don't say anything on here.
Went to a merchants today there was 6 bags left out of the pallet I didn't buy the ones that were gone.
Not got a clue why it's priced at stupid £10 plus.
On your jobs kitchy you wouldn't want to use it instead of multi or board to be fair.

Ive got my bedroom to do been doing it for last 2 years lol..its took me 2 years to board ceiling and stud party wall in bedroom just need to find sum energy and get go to skim the walls but I just cnt envisage paying for uni to do it

Thanks all. Good shout Vince, will go and borrow a bag tomorrow and see how it goes. ( have never used it before).
Having it hang for hours won't be a problem, can always work late, having a pallet of gear that goes off in the bucket however would be a bit of a drag.:(

Out of interest is it a merchants that has it or a b n q.?
Don't have to say the company just interested.

It's never taken off here, only two places had it, B&Q and Jewsons. Both had a pallet each and they both went out of date I think jewsons ended up dumping it cos it was about 4 - 5 months out of date. B&Q managed to sell all of theirs but it must have been creeping up to 6 months out of date. I bought about 10 bags when it was 4 weeks out of date and it was fine

I had a nightmare with it yesterday over an old plasterboard ceiling. Every coat was tearing and wasn't too happy with finish that was left. It was for my Gran in her spare room but if it had been a paying customer I'd have pva'd it and mixed up again

Should of ran it through your machine if you can't get round it fast enough :risas:

That's what all the old timers on here do :hola:

I'm annoyed as few weeks back I two coated with same gear in my rental property and was a great finish. Think I'll just leave it for low suction painted surfaces from now on.

Sorry, just got back in, it's at Jewsons Abingdon, never seen it in there before and doesn't look like they'll be getting anymore in unless specifically ordered, they can't seem to sell it!

I think once folk work out what they can and can't use it on it will be more popular. Just now it seems to be trial and error.

Use a couple of bags always try to 2 coat with uni finish and a plastic blade ideally speed skim I think is a must ,it keeps the moisture and it's flattened quick..
I have used upto 6 months plus out of date and been okay, but as said before it will go one way or the other .
What kind of surfaces you think you might go over with it.
Age of property .?
Artex?

You are right there stu I not disagree ,end of the day like you said before it is better placed on painted and can be a battle on drier surfaces a spray of water or quick watered down pva can help with the ones that would dry fast but most would say well what's the point ,fair enough..
I do think people can adapt to the set times if they try though on the quick dryers which can be good but like with that ceiling it can piss you off if it goes like plonk.

It's not the set times it's the workability of it at times. It was horrible doing that ceiling when every pull would tear and trying to fill in anything would make it worse. Had I given it three coats it would have been fine but as you know I refuse to do that as I'm not paying a premium to end up doing more work. I'll just stick to low suction painted surface now.

Why should I be arsed to adapt to set times of this gear at over a tenner a bag and possibly still need to pva certain bits or 3 coat certain bits. The stuff was made for a problem that didn't exist in my opinion and is proving to be a flop.

Did 2 landing walls on Monday with multi, over some plasterboard that had been up a year on an extension on the knock through to the extension Victorian house ,pva d 2 coats 50/50 of evostik over both surfaces and it dried like a bitch nearly caught me out (couldn't believe it)nearly gave up on it ,sods knows why it went like it did, I laid in again to just finish and that was fresh multi and laid in twice.

Like you say though if it's tearing on first coat and refuse to do a third you can't pull out fat or more it around to get a finish like multi that's why I say 3 coat if peeps are in the s**t.

It's mainly over painted walls, some flat, some have some god- awful polly ripple type rubbish on them, not artex.
We're over boarding existing artex ceilings but not sure if it's any good on new board, will have enough of it and at that price it would be handy if it is?

If you get the pallet after a quick try with 2 bags ,boards are fine in fact a good surface to try it on.

The stuff is pish, used it again last week and was not any better than last occasions I used it.
Only use is inaccessible areas u can't pva in my opinion Due to radiators, kitchen wall units tight to ceilings.
If the setting time was quicker maybe, but this hanging about lark f*** that.
And don't say some spreads don't give it a chance or want it to fail.I want it to
Succeed as it gives more options.
I have used it and it don't do it for me.
