Artex everywhere! Thick on the walls - Brown under the paint. Is it Artex? Asbestos?

Hi All,

Really hope you can help, I've been getting different opinions everywhere. Looking to plaster over the artex, one plasterer came round and noticed under the white paint the textured stuff is actually brown/ orangey brown. Would this be gypsum rather than "Artex" am I safe to scrap it back and prep it for the plasterer? What precautions should I take? Mask (will the cheap ones work? OR worth spending the money) overall, googles?
1 - If its brown is it highly unlikely to contain asbestos?
2. Any other ways I can tell without getting it tested? Crumbly? Soluble?
3. Any hits and tips for the best ways?
4. Do I need to take the carpet up because of the dust/asbestos?
5. Should I spray it continually with water?
6. If I use X Tex remover do the walls need to be washed down before they can PVA and plaster?
Any and all advise welcomed.

That's plaster not artex.. 100% sure.. Possible fire damage and its been painted over the smoke damage so you can see that sometimes under the paint there is black / brown but I can see multi finish plaster
 
Thanks all, I really appreciate your help. I've started scraping back using a 4" scraper. Its coming off but a little too well in some places. I'm guessing divots are as bad at peaks to a plasterer or is this not so? Should I really take take to avoid this and any tips?

its plaster dear knok off high spots double coat it with pva 50/50 and get it skimmed

Peaks are the only issue as the new plaster has to cover the entire wall. Idea is to take peaks off so you need minimal thickness of plaster on top.

As said above I’d be concerned if the plasterer has the experience for that type of skimming as he didn’t even realise it was skim on the wall.
 
Hi, no this is a new plasterer but as the artex is so thick and I’m trying to do it on such a tight budget I’m prepping the walls for them. It’s truly everywhere and 10-15mm thick in places it’s a huge amount of work to prep every surface. So will save quite a bit. Are divots as bad as peaks? Thank you again for your help

Divots no problem as @lurpak k said its the peaks that need to be taken down ad they dictate the whole wall depth etc.

Ok, ok, sorry to rile you guys. I am paying for a great plasterer hence at that price an hour (the completely justified price) I want to do what I can in the less skilled prep area and make it as easy as possible for him to come in and do a great job. Surely helping isn’t a negative thing to do?
I really appreciate all the helpful answers and advice so far, so thank you again x

Depends...a good job costs what it costs. If you try to cut corners, then things can go horribly wrong.

When the customer wants to do the labouring or prep, very often they will get things wrong and it becomes an arseache to put right before you've even started.
