coursers & chancers prove me wrong

Wether you did a course or a proper apprenticeship the main thing is the blokes who taught you on site along with your course or apprenticeship etc I was very lucky where I served my time was old boys close to retirement who knew pretty much everything but would not cut corners and everything had to be spotless clean. I remember getting my first "full wage" paypacket after serving my time passing all my college and skills test etc I took them for a pint (not like me that is it!?? ) I did it to say thanks for everything they did to help me :birra:
 
People talk about short courses as if they're a new thing. Anyone on here do the first short course training/retraining? They were for miners when the pit closures were in full swing '84/'85.

30 years ago, doesn't time fly? :(
 
I worked with a chap a couple of years ago... he only did a week because he did not see that he needed a second week... he was as rough as old boots...

His customers only started to see how shite he was when I started doing jobs with/for him I was asked numerous times to come back on on my own...

He told me I was too messy...lol ok mate yep thats it.. lol

Point is he was desperately busy with work and I recon all his customers had no idea what a good plasterer was... he had a fully signwritten van all the talk but could not price a job to save his life as he was always way way way under what I would go in at and just shite

I dont think its that much.... I get to see a lot of what colleges have to offer and "some" of the students I see are sooo bad its embarrassing... I feel embarrassed sometimes even watching the...

Young lad who wrked for us said 1 of his teachers said he was earning roughly that cos I cudnt believe it either

The qual i got was the old C&G ICA intermediate construction award Plastering covered way more stuff than the apprentice i took on doing his NVQ. he did zero rendering/fiborous/eml.

when i was ringing around for a job i couldn't get a start because i didnt have the years in the trade even though i had a recognised qual so it was a bit of a catch 22.

Clearly i knew f**k all after 6 weeks but i didnt know any better and like mentioned we all have to start somewhere. What i lacked in trade skill i made up for in life skills and bumming jokes

looking at how much cleaner and more money sparkies and plumbers are on i maybe would have done one of those trades
 
The wages are not that great when I looked especially if they want someone experienced and @Arti what about what you have learnt off here? :)

one of only 3 plasterers that i have known to become millionaires, was lou cater,a chap who had brought himself out of the army. he had signed up for 22 years and because of this he was given a years paid leave. working as a plasterers labourer on his leave, therefore living on 2 wages.
lou took a lot of training as he moaned about every thing but he did get there in the end.
he had a good business brain and could spot a good deal a mile away.

there was loads of work about in the 60s and 70s .he was soon saved up and started subbing work out. he employed a workforce of about 100 men. he had a huge house in ardleigh essex which was at one time a boys school. he purchased an even larger one in usa .

lou died a few years ago at 62, i always enjoyed his company.
 
Very good tradesmen are normally poor delegaters, in order to make really big money you need to be able to do this, which is why few really good plasterers become millionaires, I know quite a few middling ones who have done real well though.

earn the equivilent of 30k per year in todays money when me and the wife retire and that would be enough for me. Too much stress being rich.
 
Does sound familiar @Marshy

I think it comes down to the kind of person the individual is and how badly they want to change/improve their life. I suppose at the end of the day it doesn't matter how much effort a person puts in there are some trades that a little natural ability helps to get it right. You can't knock someone for giving it a go though. I don't like the ones who think they know it all and you can tell they are winging it

He may have told a few porkies there Malc, fair play that he ended up doing well for himself, but the army doesnt send blokes on leave for a year on full pay.
 
Hi lads, longtime lurker on this forum, as i don't post much, but learnt alot from you boys. I did the goldtrowel 6 week course in 2014 i think it was, the course gives you the basics, but its not the same as a proper apprenticeship. As a time served self employed sparkie, (yeah i know some of you are guna think i'm mental) i decided i wanted to expand my skills and was always interested in plastering, it kinda goes hand in hand with sparking. So did the course, i don't advertise as a spread, i'm just slowly building up experience, kinda wish i could get in with a full time spread as i've still got so much to learn!

If you delegate I think you have to except poor to medium quality workers, rarely will you find a top spread that is employed. Site work you may get away with delegating, as any numpty can turn up on site, doesn't matter about there attitude etc, long as they get the job done. Much harder to delegate in domestics as you can't have any old numpty turning up, it could kill your reputation within no time, especially with most of us wearing our reputations on our sleeves on review sites etc.

Plumbers and electricians can make very good money, but one advantage we have over them are our materials are cheap.

Have a look at the electrician's or plumber's forums. The biggest gripe/problem they have are short courses adn the people the churn out dragging down standards and rates.
 
I pay nearly £500 a year to be a member of the niceic, have my work scrutinised by an assessor once a year, and theres still thousands of people who do their own electrical work that isn't safe/not upto regs & still don't get a certificate. This 'part p' b*ll***s was suppised to stop all this, just another way for someone to make a fortune. Not to mention having to buy certs, new regs books, have testers calibrated yearly.

As freeD says, plastering materials are way cheaper, profit margin is massive compared to sparking on the domestic side anyway.

I dont think short coursers are any worse than NVQ's. the criteria for the practical element for gaining a level 2 in solid plastering is a joke

Most of the public are still clueless about part p. People quite often ask me if I do electrics and when I explain that their house insurance is invalidated if new work isn't signed off by a registered sparky they look at me like I've grown a second head.

The funny thing is is that it really is easy to get Part P and with electrics it either works or it doesnt... I personally hate electrics... it bores me to tears. Jane wired our place and then we had it checked by a sparky to make sure it was all safe... he said it was some of the neatest wiring he had seen :D

My mrs couldnt wire a f**k**g plug.....she couldnt get the battery cover back on the remote the other day.

But plumber can turn up with a boiler in the van and they have at least £200 -£500 profit on the boiler as they walk through the door.if I put a mark up on a bag of skim I might make £1.50 on it.unless I nicked it £6.50
