f**k sake man this isn't hard to understand surely .... Right let's say you earn 30k and drive a s**t van. You get taxed on 19k and pay 3800 tax.
Let's now say I spend 3k on leasing a nice van or a van on finance. Now my earnings are 27k and get taxed on 16k paying 3200 tax. Soooo 30k - 3800 is 26200.
27k - 3200 is 23800. So you're 2400 worse off driving your nice van.

I bought one new the older model 2000. Drove like a bus and just as slow but I know they have improved since then.
I had it 15 years and 270,000 miles. It still did 50mpg. Only things in all that time besides brakes and servicing was 2 coil springs.............1 x roll bar bushes, ..............1 x fuel pump repair...............2x ball joints...................1x exhaust welding.
I abused the f**k out of it over loading it with timber and blocks etc. Drove it up and down mountain tracks, across fields and through the sea. It was still going when I sold it to a man who delivered firewood.
I hated it but it was the best vehicle I ever had.

You at least own a van. A professional tradesman is likely to have a van in order to carry all the tools necessary for the job and also be able to carry the necessary materials. Try loading 15 plaster bags into the back of a Sierra estate.
If you’re going to price a job in a decent van with sign writing and wearing decent kit then you’re likely to be able to demand more money and Instill more confidence in the customer than someone wearing tracksuit bottoms with holes in and they’re in a car with spirit levels sticking out of the windows. That’s my point.

I used to agree with you Lurpy but one day many years back there was something in paper where they stated the running costs of a vehicle.
So I sat down and worked out all spent besides usual stuff like brakes, service tyres etc. So costs where cost of van over 3 years then sell for sod all and repairs like clutch, shocks exhaust etc.
I think it came to around £30.00 per week over the life of second hand van that I had it for.
A brand new van was £45.00 per week..............12 month warrenty.................and doubtful I would have anything much go wrong in the 5 years I was going to keep it.........no heartache...............And then I could sell it for a whack after 5 years.
Basically no competition but I ended up keeping it 15 years and I would say it ended up costing me about £15.00 per week.
Perhaps I was lucky?

Frightening to think that you have to spend that amount of money and more on a car.
You don’t have to do you it’s not compulsory, but once I started making a few quid I’ve always brought decent motors. Some do drugs, gamble etc my vice had always been having a good car to get about in, and when I bought performance cars it bought great pleasure now it’s comfort as I’ve got older.
