I've got to be honest mate, I'm with @John j on this. When I refer to one coating it's literally that. One coat.
When working on higher suction backgrounds, Hardwall or S&C, it was often the norm to lay in with the same gear as the first coat. It was never referred to as 'one coating' back then.
I first heard of 'one coating' in the late eighties from my uncle and that was just a quick fill down any beads and scrim and just one reasonable coat right over.

1 coating is either of the 2 ways below =

A) laying 2 tight coats out of the same mix!

B) Putting 1 heavy coat only over your work!

2 coating in the eyes of any time served spread or clerk of works on site is 2 separate applied coats from 2 different mixes/gauges of plaster as they have different setting times.

The difference is night & day!!!

Any motorcunt, mono don or artex boy will tell you this:

One coat is one heavy coat on the wall , which you work around to achieve the finish you are happy with, wether you use trowel, sponge or toilet paper doesn't matter.
The moment you put another layer on, even from the same mix in the same bucket, mixed with the same whisk and the same ph content in the water is classed as 2nd coat. The first one has already pulled in and won't be the same as the one in the bucket . Time here is irrelevant.

That's just it though Andy over a high suction background it gives the same finish as a fresh 2nd for that reason!

For clarity I've been the one on here admiting to 1 coating boardwork on here for last 10 years!

But however you approach 2 tight from same mix or 1 heavy coat it's the same period!

If you ask skimmer only then yes, but rendering is more advanced you know that:numberone:

I think it’s a real shame that plasterers on price on site have to come up with new ways to get make money faster . That’s why I went domestic so I can take my time and leave a decent job and set my own rates . You never see a plumber or sparky or any other trade work as hard as a plasterer for the same money . My brother in law is a site painter on price and he earns more than the plasterers on the same job . What’s all that about . I thought after the recession when most got out the trade and there is no new blood coming into the trade that prices would go up . But when you get folks smashing houses out one coating no one stands a chance.

Your probably right but I would give others a chance of making decent money without killing them selves . For instance those who want to two coat or maybe have I’ll health and it takes them a bit longer . Or even lads who want to train someone but can’t take the time out because of the pressure of price work .

Was sat down with wife only last night trying to get 1st quarter organised for 2019 usual scenario every wants you at same time!

Tbh I don't know if I want all the agro anymore keep thinking about f**k it all off and just plod on my own with just a lad.!

It’s just the world we live in now, all politics. If you’re managing a site budget and got dickheads willing to destroy their bodies and skim whole
Houses for £800..isn’t your problem.

It’s like the benefit system. I disagree with scums signing on if they’re able to work.. but is their fault theres a system in place to enable them not to work..

It’s a real shame lads go skimming for pennies. But if they don’t, someone else will so they’re kind of stuck.

If I didn’t have the ability to make my own money running my own business, I’d sooner do a sparky course than go on site skimming. Painters are earning more, its f**k*d.
