its the same with rendering, it can add lumps of money to your house, transform the appearance of it, yet people wont spend couple of grand to do a gable and a front that will last 30 years plus. yet theyd happily spend a grand on a big tv , couple of grand on a holiday etc.

Agree, but they can buy the TV & holiday on the 'never-never', fancy monthly payments on your craftmanship?

that's the daftest thing i've ever heard. so what. you've still got to quote a realistic ballpark figure to stand any chance of getting the work.

Sorry, James. I don't know what came over me. I felt all queer all of a sudden. It just seemed a nonsensical argument. I didn't mean to be rude. :RpS_thumbup:

400 notes for 5 days is £80 a day, how the feck can anyone have half a decent life on that money. Also with regards to standards of work you get what you pay for, the poor are getting poorer and the rich well there just greedy *****. I was getting £50 a day 30 yrs ago. So how much work do you want for £80 a day.

Did I here right that the government is stepping in with regards to the 90 days payment and forcing house builder to pay faster?

With rendering it can look the same when finished but what has been put into the job can be very different. One could have been done off a scaffold and a full render system used, for example hacked off, rend aid, fully meshed, plastic quality beads, machine applied ocr with stress patches and the other done off ladders and cripples with sand and cement formed corners and put on over the old with pva.

I have two of the latter method cowboys to compete with. I never do get their jobs and they make a lot more money than I do.

i here you rigsby, to do a proper job sometimes costs alot more but people just wont spend the money daft really how many jobs have we been on and they say the kitchen costs ex amount thousands etc.. and they argue the toss over a vital component of the fabric of a property i.e external render, i do apologise if this thread has gone on a bit but its been interesting i am now a happy camper stuy

My advice to guys not earning enough from plastering is diversify. We advertise as plasterers but also general building. We are capable of most building work and if there's things we can't do we sub it and add a little on.

Jobs like putting in an rsj, fitting kitchens and bathrooms and even extensions is where you can make ££. I never regret doing plastering always involved in big jobs but sadly it's an undervalued trade.

To be honest the small builders I have met and worked for are the dumbest mother fookers iv ever met. My pay hasn't changed much in 10 years I dont moan about it im just happy I got my health and some beer money at the end of the week.
Oh and no call backs

What do you mean by "No call backs?"

When out and about with the mrs and little one earlier, we walked past a development of two new builds on the waterfront that we had priced back in the summer.

Parex provided a full specification, asking for 20mm of render (mono), with paragaurd on top, and as it was on lightweight 3.5's a full mesh. I submitted our quote and that was that.

Anyhow, someone has made a start, cheap nasty 10mm Chinese beads tacked on tight with clouts to the blockwork, half way round with a base coat, but no evidence of mesh sat in there so I guess there giving that a miss, he is a better man than me if he can hide mesh in 6mm of mono. No window protection, even though they are expensive black aluminium frames.

Im looking forward to seeing it finished, and how its fairs with the south-westerly storms belting all 10mm of it.

It's frustrating that there are so many people willing to skimp on the finish, fortunately we are in a position now where 90% of our work is recommendation and from people prepared to pay for a quality job.

Some people can be so tight, I had a recommendation from a friend recently, house must be worth 750,000 at least, went round priced it at a good rate, she gave me job on the spot, then phoned me back after speaking to her husband requesting keys and made excuses. Made loads of false promises about giving me the work.

Heard back from my friend 4 weeks later they had recommendation for cheap Polish builders. They did the job and customer wasn't happy didn't even skim ceiling just tape and jointed. But to make matters worse to of her grandmothers rings went missing.

At the end of the day pay less pay twice.

I've seen a number of posts saying how hard a living plastering is. I'm self building a house, and all I can say is plasterers have the easiest time of it. I can't believe the amount of downtime in the profession. Complain all day about how imperfect the surface they are plastering on to, and how joiner/brickie/por sod who boarded should have done their job better. I hold down a full time job, and come home to build the house for fun, and yet the plasterers complain about how early 9am in the morning is, how difficulty the poor quality scrim tape I have provided is, or how cold the site is, the list goes on.

I take home 1500 quid a month, no chance of foreigners, and work around 50 hours a week with no overtime and no pay rise for 6 years, studied to degree level, and work in a so called profession, life always sounds greener on the other side. Life is hard for most of us at the moment.
