    mixing s&c by hand

    I use an old ready mix compo tub off a building site i worked on years ago, you can stab it with your shovel and it will not go through, you can wack it with a length of 4x2 it will not split, had it years and never let me down. (yet)

    Skip hire

    i found a place near to me that for clean hard core i can tip up to 5 ton for a fiver, so thats what i do and still charge the client for skip hire. The bad thing is that at the moment my trucks off the road and theres not much you can get in a wheelbarrow and my feet are tired.

    its dead easy, its all in the wrist, i find it very messy so cover anything up thats new ie doors, windows, driveways etc. Also watch your eyes as it goes every where and you end up looking like something out of a horror film so every now and then stop a rub your self down with a clean cloth.

    skim cracking over scrim joints?

    did you brush the dust off the brick/block work as maybe some of the dabs may have come loose and may move enough to crack the joints in the boards and it only takes a knock or two to move them.

    one coat plaster?????

    To help you go faster put some cement powder in with the bonding when mixing it. It will go off a lot faster ready for the skimming. It depends on how much cement you put in, the more the faster it will set.

    Cleaning brickwork

    take off the render, wire brush brick work, apply acid and jet wash off. Not much else you can do for little money. But sometimes the render is there for a reson like rubbish brickwork or old windows or doors taken out and bricked up so watch out as you may have to have another plan just incase...

    from a traditional renderer i'm glad to see these new renders have problems with them just like sand-cement-lime renders. I think i'll stick to the old stuff as its easy to repair and its also cheaper.

    fixing a bad rendering job

    Its simple as your render is only as good as what its gone over. so if its coming off now, it will come off just the same when you've gone over the top. So take it back to the brick work and start again. But try to find out why its coming off now and to stop it coming off again.

    You can use s and c with a water proof additive but also add anti crack fibre in the mix. Always worked well for me. It helps if the stone work is bit rough and stops slumping but dont over do it with the water and yes pva first.
