my son uses a plastic hawk , his trowel lasts about 6 months before it goes out of shape. he does put a lot of pressure on the trowel when he trowels up.

I really dont like plastic hawks.. I have have tried them a few times now but they seem to sag and go out of shape as well

good plasterer, poor businessman.
he worked for bob hughes years ago, then started his own business. my brother robs gang and my eldest son trevors gang have done a little work for him, the say it is chaos with a load of chasing around.

Trowels

I was having a rummage in the shed and found this from ten years ago - the steel looks a lot better quality than you get now.
Won it in a competition through PB mag.
 
I got free MT Carbon from Direct Building supplies about 4 yrs ago, its worn beautiful. Ive given up with s*p*r*lex and all the other trowels, been back on the Carbon Steel for ages, reckon if i bought another it would`nt be as good.

I still finish with the nelamax but I use a stainless 16 MT now right through
 
I think pound for pound the ss tyzack 13inch trowel is a great bit of kit. I got one out of bnq.years ago used it for messing about .bonding ECT. Then cleaned it up one day it was a great finish trowel till I dropped it and broke the handle . Only 28quid. Good for newbie or diyer.

I use to lay on with 13 inch my then flatten in with 18 then second coat with 16 and then flatten in again with 18.

Then start growling up with a super flexible trowel then finish with plastic trowel...

But now I use the 16 till the end and cross trowel with the plastic
 
Said it before. Plastic trowel in the right hands is a faster set and better looking finish.

The problem is having to constantly sand them down from nicks. Even the grit from skim can mark a plazi enough to put very very hard to see lines in skim.

To be fair the very fine lines will just cover with paint anyway.
In my experience plastic trowels hate beads more than anything else.

Yeah but then a quick polish with some wet and dry and all is well...

I have always liked plastic trowels

Yup absolutely destroys them.... that is when a super flexible steel trowel superior... but ones again you need to ti.w it right :-)

With multi finish being what it is it does not drag. You dont need to lash water at it either just keep the blade clean.

Creates a nice even finish.... the biggest mistake people use with flexible trowels is using them before the finish is firm enough

I’ve had one for a while and use it the same way , it is good to flatten the zombie mix.
