If you have been there a few years you will know the wife's family, she is one of the Fitt's. I saw Dave Gardener the other week, he was my Landlord when I first moved in with my missus 24 years ago!
Thank you for your kind offer mate.

So your going into the field on your own hmmmmmmmmmmmm how long have you been plastering? Have you ever had to find your own work and more importantly have you ever priced your own work? OH and good luck :)

Labouring & improving for 2 years, I pick things up quickly!
I've had to find my own work all of my working life, never been 'gifted' anything nor expect anything!
Priced up my own work? Estimate time to do work add cost of materials. I can use both a tape measure and calculator. I'm sure I will make mistakes though, but I bet I won't make the same one twice!

Good luck coz your gonna need it if thats all you have done, im not questioning you as a person but you have been in the game 2 minutes so i doubt anyone has anything to worry about. If i was you i would spend another 2 years with your gaffer and do a few jobs at weekend to learn the other side of the job you dont know about. Its simple turning up for work every day for a boss but what goes on behind the schenes ie pricing is a job and skill in its self, also talking a a customer through a job ie materials and so on. Set up a website for your area building up your own client base over a few years and if there is something your not sure of, leave it or give it your boss if he is quiet.

I think I will have to, to get established.

Flyers, Business Cards, Shop windows, Yell.com, local press talking with family and KeithUK:RpS_lol:

my god! well i shall just save you £400. keep well clear of yell.com. we had them for 1 year and never received a phone call,

Please don't take this the wrong way, I do accept your point here. But, they are sending kids out of Training Schools after 6 weeks as qualified!
Two years I agree is not a long time but long enough to realise that I am not going to learn any more unless I go it alone.
I have walked this planet long enough to understand that I am never going to stop learning, why, I know that too, because I am interested.
I will get work because I want work and will do everything necessary to get work! I will know when I have 'cracked it', when I am doing my first recommended job.
I must be sort-of ok as his contacts are asking him if he could get me to do the job!

Keith, that is crazy! The Boss and I were a little quiet so spoke with a local (thanet) spread that was advertising on Yell in Thanet + Canterbury who could not cope with enquiries! As mentioned above, we went on there 4+ weeks ago and are getting 4-6 calls a week.

I wont take it the wrong way i have thick skin :) dont believe the bullshit about the six week course thing and i also wouldnt measure yourself off it, your right you wont learn anymore till you go on your own but thats why i and others are warning you, learn that bit as you are working. We all want work but that doesnt guarantee you work all im saying is in two years i dont think you could know enough to go on your own and gain work then do it but anything is possible. How old are you i didnt notice you mention it? You have a job maybe ask for a payrise to cover your petrol. Also do you have your own tools (i mean all tools) and do you have a van?

If they are turning into jobs ,then great mate , still not a road i would go down ,the Mrs does not work for them ,does she ?:RpS_unsure:

Also do you have your own tools (i mean all tools) and do you have a van?

I have been buying all the tools for the last 8 months, when I leave, his van is going to be empty! I have also introduced and converted the Boss to the 'new' tools eg. spatulas speedskim

I recently purchased an Estate car which I can use for family & work, yes I have insured it for work.

I know your only trying to 'mother' me but you've got to let me go!

if you honestly believe you are good enough then go for it like you said you feel you need to spread your wings and learn more, i did this about 7 years ago after learning from scott for 3 years, i did struggle for the first couple of years after i left because of my age, when i turned up to look at a job alot of people just dismissed me straight away becuase i was only 18 19 when i went on my own, but i kept at it and work did improve, one thing i will say is im not much of a business man which is why i have ended up back working for my old boss after 7 years away from him, it wassnt because i was a bad business man persay more that it was just all getting ontop of me and i was becoming very unhappy with my work and more and more withdrawn

It is a bit more then putting it up a wall ,when you are running your own business , without my Mrs i would be **** ,but i don,t tell her that :RpS_biggrin:

imho you need a business plan.you will not survive with your current thoughts. there is a hell of a lot more to it then you think. stay with your employment and have a good think!

Malc, believe me, i'm thinking of nothing else!

It's going to be at least 3 months until I move away, we have shed loads of rendering (3 houses) to do when this weather improves, this is great as I am a little inexperienced with S&C.

I need a little more practice with coving but this won't happen as the Boss loves it!

The most I ever learnt was when the Boss went away for a month on one of his 'Asia' trips last December, it was unbelievable how much I improved in this time. Frankly, I can't wait for it to happen again!

IMO 2 years is a very short time, that it takes 4 years to serve your time before your a full plasterer. We had boys leave us in the good times and came back less than a year to us and are with us since. But the big thing is will you make more money out on your own for the time that is in it.

this i where i went wrong when i first went out like i said i was young and naive 18 19 more money than i had had before, but as soon and i got my first little girl at 21 it made me buck up and fly straight, buuut like i said i struggle keeping on top of things business wise no matter how good or bad at the job i may be if you cnt run a business then in todays climate your up the creak without a paddle:RpS_thumbup:.
if things dnt work out working for scott i will go back on my own as i got by for 7 years without him but ill have to keep taking a little break every now and then to let my mind get off of work, like i said it was getting on top of me in a bad way

I left my old boss after spending about 6 years with him, Was a big mistake at the time It didn't end well. I wanted to be my own man, it had been on my mind about a month and things came to boilling point one day and it was over.

I spent around 6-12 months on my backside, i left with no back up, no plans. I called him up and did around 12 months with him on and off whilst i starting building my own contacts, he was fine about this as he knew the score. The man i though was a hard up ****, was actually a decent guy.

You dont realise how well you have it untill you go. I still do bits for him now a again, i still feel guilty to this day about what i did, but when you get something in your head, sh*t happens.

Its your call, if you were responsible for feeding the family paying the bills, then think twice ... If your going to be doing odd job here and their for bonus money you will probs be ok.

You probs won't make the same money you make with him a year, on your own for couple of years ...

this is the problem you can not run before you can walk.
my son and my self have worked together for 26 years, we can render, we can cove anything. we can do any job that is plastering. this is the sort of competition that you will be up against

Right, time to come clean. It appears that you all think i'm twenty something.......i'm 44 and will be 45 next month!
I should make it to a ripe old age, as a newbie i've hardly worn out my wrists, elbows or shoulders!
Oh, I have a heart condition too, but don't panic excercise is proving good for me!

I do go quite well for an ill old boy though!

Of course I work for the money, but money isn't as important as it was a few years ago, the kids are growing up now and less dependant.
I just want to practise what I know but do it better than I am allowed to do now.
