Beginning to realise how hard this game is !!

Im not working , looking work next year. Best not to advertise prices but i've heard the money is what you would get 15 years ago! Heard a few site grafters getting big money but im too creaky for that now :)

Beginning to realise how hard this game is !!

Anyway good luck to ya pal. Cheers man , have a 6 week break in Asia before i get started lol , so plenty of time to get even unfitter! Quick questions 1. What other jobs do you do? Was a trainer in a college for around 7 years. Work in IT , design websites , repair hardware and software with...

    Longest time off the tools?

Worked from i was 14 labouring and skimming cupboards :) You young ones know nothing of 50kg bags , no telescopics or tubs or feck all :) Mixing to 4 or 5 of the fussy bastards with a bicycle cog. Standing over tons of sand in the pissing rain filling a monster of a mixer then driving a beat up...

Beginning to realise how hard this game is !!

Maybe im dreaming here but im quite looking forward to it , reckon it will be easy enough after a week or two , no labouring or feck all , just on the tools and no running around pricing jobs and all that. Few lads to have a bit of craic with and a donkey choker in the hand every Friday. Yep...

Beginning to realise how hard this game is !!

Hmmm , been flat out with my other jobs and the plastering is over till Feb next year. Was thinking of going FT at it but not so sure reading all this. Things are picking up? Building all over the place in Northern Ireland. My idea was to go subbie again for a few months and get back into the...

    What have I done ????

Good to see Bill Hicks make it onto a plastering forum. Maybe that explains some of the work ive seen recently , done by Timothy Leary and the merry pranksters after a week drinking Kool-Aid

    What drill/mixer is best ???

My trusty £30 B&Q 240 looks like its on its way out :( Had it years , reckon it was doing mushrooms for insulation board that did it rather than mixing. Brushes defo going , ill be on the look out for Lidl one myself :) 6-8 bags in a hit would kill me nevermind my drill

How to put k rend on

Do you know how much this crap costs a bag? How can a client spend so much on materials then not vet the people applying it? Something wrong there.

    Domestics

I used to love maintenance and commercial stuff , shop fits and that. Always something different. The thought of knocking flats or houses out week after week for a wage , hard graft and crap money. Domestics are great but im getting lazy , carried a few tubs up stairs today and i was wheezing...

    trade union??

I agree there Danny , lifetime learning a skill and people work for less than minimum wage, crazy! Running a business comes after earning a wage , if you are able to support your family etc and work is plentiful then you start thinking about running a business , thats the natural progression...

Something as simple as plasterers not working for less than £xxx And being able to do the job in the first place.

    What's ya worst work injury

got two at the minute https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Tietzes-syndrome/pages/introduction.aspx Costochondritis Got that from over stretching on a ceiling too big. and also rotor cuff injury , dunno how that happened , think it was carrying buckets of mortar away miles from the mixer...

    Travelling to work is work

Easier when working for yourself in Domestics and small privates , you price all that into the job. In my case i dont leave to around 9:10 , where i live it is a waste of time leaving any earlier unless you leave at 7:00. Plus i mostly do domestics and not gonna be there when kids are having...

  18. john simpson

what do u use to cut angle beads?

Left the Wiss on a job a few months back and never got them back :( Stuck with some old style ones i had in the lock up but they are actually really good so ive stuck with them

Back on the tools for a bit

Yeah , i only work a couple of weeks a month at the plastering. I enjoy it that way and can pick and choose my work and stay client direct on domestics. Have a few other earners that pay my tax and ensure a steady income , decimated all my outgoings so the plastering is for holidays and stuff...

    How to render !!

Thats how they render in Spain , i seen a load of ones doing it , was amazed at the time , took forever but looked grand when it was finished! Your man is one of the twenty bag heroes :) ones i watched doing it had wee pointing trowels and didnt seem in much of a hurry

Well since you dont believe in teaching apprentices to labour , they wouldnt be able to mix sand and cement for a start. You are a fan of it, im not, its good that people disagree :) I am pleased for the kids that do get to take part and it is useful for them. However i dont feel it represents...

    Where are you working today?

Yeah ran out of one. Makes the walls look flat but they were anything but! Marble worktop and return with chrome finish meant it had to be 100% at worktop height , was 2" out on one wall :( Note the spots cut out as usual for no reason but to make life harder and was about 100 degrees with zero...

    Apprentice wages

yeah i started on £25 a day :) Some of the contractors take the lads on and pay them that a week as they are not legally obliged to pay them anything. Cost you money to work , sign of the times for the young

W Yeah was on yesterday too , thats where i got started on about it :) Its great for the kids taking part and great experience for them. Pity it wasnt more inclusive for the majority of apprentices doing work they would be doing everyday and not over complicating it. Its a jolly for the people...

    Apprentice wages

Pay them what they are worth. If they are only trowelling and not mixing or laying on then they arent worth much. But likewise if they are mixing and laying on and finishing then they are worth more. Own car , tools and on the job 1st everyday and reliable when the s**t work is on , then they...

Not really , all "world champion" sportspeople dedicate themselves and have done so since early childhood , not turned up on a tuesday afternoon once or twice a month for a year. Plus when they become world champion then they tend to use the skills to make money and have a career
  31. john simpson

    World Skills UK

Absolutely Danny but it doesn't make you "World Champion" plasterer! But this is what we are telling these kids and they are going off with their level 2 NVQ to learn that it was all completely irrelevant to plastering to make money and therefore a big waste of time bar for the people making...

Ive worked in a lot of Europe and in the USA Taping and jointing is a trade in itself and everywhere i worked it was 2 coat work? World Skills UK

Well in my experience , the rest of the ordinary working class kids are forgot about and everyone must get the photo shoots and singular focus on the "worldskills" candidate. Each training centre invests money so even after the main classes are candidate focused , then they get extra time on...

    Heart problems

Yeah , got a bit heated! Think the general gist is that plastering has no increased heart risk over other jobs and in fact the nature of the job may help with fitness. Stress is more likely a factor as we are mostly self-employed and work tends to come feast of famine style. The alcohol is an...

Well your living proof that the work doesn't kill you! Screeding is one of the most stressful jobs in the trade, you cant hang about there. Its a tough one , i agree with Jurek , the office job is what i would imagine causes heart problems. Was talking to a mate about it and i agree with him...

    Heart problems

So no real evidence that plastering is damaging to the heart over any other stressful job. What about the working above your head thing? is that just a myth? Thats the thing , you would think the grafting keeps you healthy and ticking over but the more i read on it the more i think it could be damaging. My dad was a plasterer , heart attacks and strokes and all sorts , hes long retired but i always put that down to his drinking.
